If you filter and count your images with 2021 shooting dates in Lightroom, what surprises do you find? Do you use your own usage statistics to plan to sell unused lenses / cameras? Or maybe, to change the lenses you'll use more in 2022?

Personally, when I sort / filter my 2021 statistics in Lightroom, I see have still have a lot of culling to do from the November travel and multiple architecture boat tours in Chicago in August. Picking the exact total winner isn't possible yet. What I do note, though, is a better and more equal distribution of lens usage through 2021.

Usage, that's really the idea of this annual review of images and lenses used. I don't own any lenses, (nor cameras) that are not actively being used. Most, of course, are not every day / every month. But all are now being used to create 'keeper' images every year. It is this annual review of usage that helped me a few years ago to get rid of underused equipment and to push a few lenses off the shelf and back onto camera bodies for more active use.

Preliminary results say the 600mm extended configuration of the EF 300 f/2.8L IS II and the EF 2x III teleconverter have moved back to the top place in usage as I've had more time / opportunities with wildlife in 2021 as compared to 2020. Again, the incomplete culling skews actual results, but of my four bodies and 5921 images in 2021 currently remaining, I see the EOS 5DIII still being used most and the more frequently lenses with image counts in the 300 to 500 range.

I take photos of family, city hikes and outdoor hikes. I am always looking for a wall hanger. I shoot a d850 and use the f2.8 24 to 70 and the f2.8 70 to 200 equally; occasionally I will use 16-35 1.6 ed for the rare times I want a wide angle.
I have a few times when I wish I had the nikon 200-500 for the fleeting times we see a hawk or great horned owl; but none of the shots would have been very good.

I always try for the shot not taken by others.

I made a vow last spring to ditch the heavy Nikon gear and go with Olympus OMD 10 Mark IV. It came with the little 14-42 EZ lens and after upgrading to an iPhone 13 pro, I made the decision to stick with these 2 cameras (and no extra lenses) for at least a year and concentrate more on composition. I love the little Olympus and I may add one prime lens eventually to that kit but for the moment the little kit lens does a very nice job for me. My iPhone is always with me and I have to say the camera is really good….especially in night mode. I loved my Nikon stuff. I really did but had begun to feel like it really owned me instead of the other way around. I feel free now and photography has become fun again. Happy New Year to you all!! Shannon

This is a great question. So here it goes, Nikon 600mm f/4, next Nikon 500mm f/4. I did not realize this one but I got onto a Macro kick and literally My Nikon 105mm f/2.8 almost tied my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR2 lens. I will probably be shooting my Sony A1 with the Sony 600mm f/4 at our Semi-Final Orange Bowl game on Friday night, even though I will have my D850 with the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 with a 1.4 TC 1.4111 attached. This is a great topic as I have never looked at Lens Usage. I'am tempted though to sell my Sony gear and buy the Nikon Z9 now. I just took some shots with it as my friend had it Overnighted to Florida on Monday. He's one of the Photogs that does Freelance work for Sports Illustrated. He put the FTZ adapter and his Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF lens on it just to mess around with it after the morning meetings and he let me try it, it does rock the Eye Detection. He will be using it with his 400mm f/2.8 for the game and I figure that will put his 600mm on his D6. But, back to this topic, I would have never thought to lookup the Metadata in Lightroom Classic CC to see which Lenses I used the most during this Year.
