I'm in the same quandary. I have a 2009 that I managed to keep alive till now. But it's time is up. The 27" has the old Intel processor. And going from 27" to 24" just doesn't get it. What is Apple thinking? I'm disappointed.

I have an appointment with Apple this afternoon, and I’ll let you know what their suggestion is. I have disconnected my old 27 inch and discovered it brings the whole house down, practically. This is quite an ordeal.

Well, time is come for me to replace my desktop. Currently I have an iMac 27 inch 2014 that has served me well but no longer is functioning as it is supposed to. My quandary is do I sacrifice size of screen and purchase a 24 inch M1 iMac or purchase another 27 inch iMac, not able to wait to see if the 27 will be upgraded to the M1 this year.

My 21 inch iMac is seemingly fine, but is 10 years old. Hence, I am in a similar quandary. I am very interested in what you decide to do. Thanks.

I'm very disappointed.....in Apple. I feel like they have give me a "take it or leave it" choice. I've been an Apple user since 1993

My 27 inch imac died on me last week, the hard drive needs replacing.
I decided to buy a new Mi imac 24 yesterday, so far I like it and don't really notice the screen size.
I got 12 months interest free from Apple.
Hope this helps.

This gives me hope. At my stage of life I don’t really need another large learning curve. Love interest free!!!

My concern is that Apple will be abandoning the Intel chip in short order and the M1 will be their focus. I can’t wait for them to develop the 27 inch and may have to step down to the 24 inch, but we’ll see.

I've been to the Apple store. The 24" monitors have a more square shape. This makes them look smaller. The computers may be very good but they look like toys for 8 year olds. A PC is definitely NOT in the picture for me. I"ll probably have to RELUCTANTLY settle. That burns me up. And then 3 months from now they will be touting a 32" monitor and I'll be stuck with something I'm not thrilled with.

I purchased a 27" iMac about a year ago. That replaced my 2010 version. I wouldn't want anything smaller. I can remote into my earlier iMac and run programs that won't run on the new one. So, my choice of getting a new 27" worked out well for me.

i like your response. im in the same boat as many. i have the 27” screen and to me it seems i have wasted space. so ive been thinking of the 24” screen. good to know that at least one person doesn’t really notice size difference

Techie, to your request.
I had the same issue. But had no question to go with the iMac 24" M1 silicon. It is a game changer. You will be so thrilled with the speed that the 24" screen will become a non-issue. I have not regretted one moment that I stepped down in screen size.
A couple of suggestions. Do a back up of your 27" to an SSD using Time Machine. Once done, if you are confident; use 'recovery mode' and go into Disk Utility and erase the iMac drive. Do not do a 'new set up' at this time. Bring in the 27" iMac to the Apple store and trade it in for your new iMac. (If you don't wipe it at home; Apple will keep you there much longer to go through the 'process'). Bring home your new iMac and use the Time Machine backup to migrate and set up your new iMac.

Thanks. I have plenty of time and at this point in my life I will allow some young technically savvy kid do the work.

Definitely let us know.

I just went from a MacBook Pro 15” to a new 14” screen. I feel like, visually, it is more manageable. Also, less bulky. But I’m not photo-editing on it in a serious way.

Wishing you luck. Love Apple.

Just get a 27” monitor. The M is supposed to be FAST and apparently doesn’t even need a GPU
Good luck!

Same issue with me (and my MacBook Pro). I would upgrade to another Apple if the M1 chip were available, especially on my (still rather new - 12/2018) MacBook Pro. Needed to replace my desktop and ended up buying a Dell PC with a 27 inch monitor - there is a learning curve and I miss some atributes of my Apple, but there are also some advantages with the PC. If possible, I'd look for another Apple, but if the OP can't wait, a well equipped PC will also work, and I suspect the final cost will be similar. Just don't grab the cheapest one you find without knowing what it will do. :-(
