I'd d say my 85mm was "nifty". My canon came with a 52mm f1.4.lens. I used an 85mm as the standard lens. Sometimes a 105mm. I had several zoom lenses that were for specific uses.

85mm is a great lens for face and upper body candid shots.

In extremely small doses I smile. Beyond that I cringe.

I understand the history and derivation. Back in the day most cameras were sold with a 50mm lens. More often than not you had one lying around. These days it is an investment in that focal length, just like any other.

No other focal length is afflicted with such a nickname.

Why must some seemingly always attach the nifty when speaking of a 50?

Grumpy older man or silent majority?

I'll confess that this forum is the only place I've ever heard this term used in almost 60 years.

I saw it in other forums as well but only in the past 10 years or so. Not in the old days when the 50mm are plenty.

Can someone answer the all important question, Does the title "nifty" affect the performance of any 50mm lens?

In some people's minds it does.

It certainly does. Generally a non nifty ones would perform better but they are not nifty. For example the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 is nifty. The Leica Noctilux 50mm f/1.0 isn't nifty at all.

If it costs $2000 it is not "nifty". If it costs $199, it is "nifty".

If it's the plastic fantastic 50 at f/1.8, yes, it is a nifty 50 too. But, if urban hipsters from Brooklyn are just applying 'nifty' to any ol' 50, including the $1000 all the way to $2200 offerings from Sony, Nikon and Canon, it's really just that their whiskers have grown too far into their brains.

I purchased one of my three nikon F2's in 1974 with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4. It traveled well until I started using a Nikkor 35mm f/1.4.
Now I have a Z 35mm f/1.8 S, but still waiting for my Z6ii to be shipped. I have been waiting 4 weeks. If I need a 50mm, I will use my old f/1.4 with the adapter.

Full frame 35mm camera. Same with a 35mm film camera, in my opinion.
