I did not fathom that in this day and time in America that there would not be some kind of plan to help an individual like your stepson receive the insulin that he needed. That just boggles my mind.

Did you see the video?

Yes, I did. I also googled some more on the subject. I just can't understand type 1 diabetics of any economic category having to struggle to get their needed insulin. A friend of mine in college was type 1 from juvenile diabetes and had actually gone blind. We went to Wheaton College. Once a month on a Sunday we would go with a group to skid row in Chicago. Whenever they guys came on the bus and would talk to John, they would ask what his folded up cane was. When he told them it was his walking stick that he used because he was blind, you could see the guys' eyes perk up. We'd also walk around the area and talk to them. If any needed clothing, we had some on the bus.

I am going to look into the insulin availability problem more and write my Congressman and Sensators about it. This type of thing should not happen.

I was reminded again yesterday of the cost of Insulin in the U S, when I read the story of a 26 year old man who died because he could not afford the $900 per month for the drug. It breaks my heart, especially at this time of year to read of things like this happening when we live in the world of the Elon Musks and so many others like him who will never live long enough to spend their trillions.
Its probably still happening but I remember some years ago reading about bus loads of U S citizens coming into Canada from the U S to get insulin because the cost is 10% of what it is in the U S. I am assuming these were close to the borders and not days away.
I would like to find someone in the U S whose life I can make a little better. I am not rich by any means but I do have a comfortable life (mostly because I don't want much from life). I would like to make contact with someone who needs Insulin, or maybe their Child needs it. I have done a quick check and it looks like it will travel OK by mail or any form of ground transportation if packaged properly. Apparently in Canada you can buy it over the counter....not sure about the U S.
I am only looking for someone who really cannot afford it themselves or someone who has to make a choice every week/month.......do I buy food, pay the rent, or buy the insulin I need?
Thanks folks. If you know someone give me some contact info...email etc. there is no catch/scam here. I would really like to make a difference in a strangers life and in a way I'm being a little selfish. I know it will make a positive difference in mine. Merry Christmas to All.

There is insulin and then there is INSULIN/ In other words some are affordable and some are VERY expensive. Same with a lot of things. Some cars are VERY expensive- A Bugatti Chiron Goes for 3 million a Hundai sonate 25 grand. and some are less. So if possible have your Doc prescribe the affordable insulin

There are cars that run and cars that don't run so well. Same with insulin. Cheap insulin is exactly that. Cheap. Just like a cheap car. I've read about it. Have you?

My diabetic sister-in-law gets her "cheap" insulin for $8 vial at her local Community Health Center. She does not have prescription drug coverage. Her A1C is kept below 7 on this insulin. It's all about food choices and keeping track of your blood sugar and taking your insulin as needed to maintain a target blood sugar.

Having been in the pharmaceutical industry and in anti-diabetics for decades before I retired this year, as well as having been married to a Type 1 diabetic since 1974, I think I know something about insulin.

Have you read this entire thread? If not, I suggest you go back and read it. I came across an article that talked about the difference between insulins. Is your sister-in-law type-1? My guess is your husband is using Lantis/Humalog and not the old insulins. Read the following article for an explanation of why the less expensive insulins don't work with type 1 diabetes. I use 70/30 in conjunction with Trulicity. Without Trulicity, it is difficult to get good control. I have to use Humalog too often to bring down high levels, and I'm a type 2. Trulicity is not for use with Type 1. My scores are great a and I use half the insulin in conjunction with Trulicity.

I did NOT say cheap or insulin that doesn;t work. But there is much less expensive insulin that have worked for millions of diabetics and are affordable. Another example is housing. you can buy a perfectly acceptable 3 bedroom home in Queens or Brooklyn Or in the Bronx Or Staten Island ( all in NY city) for $350,000 or a 3 bedroom place in Manhattan for 25,million.

See my previous post and read the link. It may help explain a lot. For type 1 diabetics, not all insulins are the same. Even for me, a type 2, I have difficulty getting good control with 70/30 alone. With Trulicity, I get consistently low results using half to two/thirds the dose of insulin.

Just to put types of insulins into perspective. For 20 years the only insulin available to my husband was pork insulin. Didn’t even need a prescription. Didn’t have glucose test strips etc.

I am certainly no expert(ask me about cardiac implants And I know what I am talking about) but have you tried metformin? Much less expensive

Metformin is a good option for many type 2 diabetics however it's not a good choice for the type 1.
The big difference between the two is type 1 doesn't make enough insulin where type 2 generally makes enough but the body basically forgot how to properly use it.
Pills like metformin help you to utilize the insulin you produce it doesn't really help if you don't produce enough.

Since you have a bit of experience with the pharmaceutical industry and diabetes I'm sure you are aware that the cheap insulin does not work for everyone just because it does for your husband.
