Thank you Mike! I still have a foot in each camp, with the added wrinkle of only using old manual focus 1980s lenses on my modern mirrorless body. I look forward to merging / consolidating everything onto a single mirrorless digital platform.

and which platform might that be???

[quote=Mr Mike W]This question is for those who have made the transition from DSLR to Mirrorless cameras. /quote]

Contrary to popular belief my transition was quite painful. I switched from Nikon D300s to Sony A7 in 2014. Sony was quite clunky compared to Nikon. Main advantage was number 15 on Paul's list. For me it was difficult to adjust to EVF. It took some time to adjust; speed and resolution of EVF did not help. Eventually I got used to it. In 2018 I switched to Sony A7M3. Huge improvement over original A7. I am quite happy with A7M3, all problems/inconveniences of A7 went away...

Would I do that again? I would. Mostly because clunkers like A7 are no longer available. All manufacturers made huge progress in technology...

Shooting Mirrorless M43 since circa 2005. I like the advantages of the EVF.

Disappointed that Canicon took so long
To catch on.

August, 2008, was the first announcement of Micro 4/3. But that does seem to be a long time ago! 4/3 preceded it.

I started getting seriously interested in M43 in 2012. Canikon weren’t doing anything interesting with mirrorless then, but PannyOly were well into third generation bodies. I finally switched (to a Lumix GH4) in 2015.

I like all of Chg_Canon’s list. It’s enough reasons to switch.

Now I’m waiting to see the Panasonic Lumix GH6, delayed due to electronic parts shortages. I may just grab a GH5 II instead.

Why do I love mirrorless? Let me count the ways:

1. Smaller body by removing the space needed for that yesteryear flapping mirror.
2. IBIS that turns every lens into a stabilized lens, even the golden oldies of the manual focus, pre-electronic ages.
3. EVF with shimmering highlights of the plane of focus.
4. Histogram available for display in electronic view finder (EVF).
5. Detailed 10x zoom in EVF.
6. Silent (not a single noise) shutter.
7. Extreme frames per second, 20+.
8. Image playback in EVF for review when LCD impossible to see in bright light.
9. Image playback at 10x zoom in EVF.
10. Sharper mirrorless lens designs.
11. More ultra fast lenses as sharp wide open as any stepped down DSLR lens ever.
12. One digital platform supporting portfolio of legacy DSLR lenses, legacy SLR lenses and modern mirrorless lenses.
13. Autofocus beyond f/8 for extended configurations.
14. Platform for any / all ongoing technology advancements in digital photography.
15. EVF that displays the results of the image before shooting.
16. EVF that allows for ad hoc updates like boosting the ISO for a brighter focus view, then restore ISO and shoot, without even lowering the camera from a shooting position.
17. Entire frame available for selective AF position.

I'm sure I missed probably several others.

I'm with you!!!!!!! With the technology of cameras changing so rapidly, this might be an annual question.

Since I’m a primarily a gear collector, I have a number of legacy lenses that a mirrorless camera allows me to play with in the digital world. I didn’t switch to mirrorless exclusively - I still use a DSLR.

I get a bit tired of the constant preaching how mirrorless is god's gift to the photography world.

Have you tried it for yourself?
I started with the Olympus E-5, a heavy beast.
I have arthritis, and that camera combined with a long lens was just way too heavy for my hands.
Then my brother came to visit from overseas and brought his Olympus mirrorless. (I think it might have been the OM-D E-M1, but not sure). Anyway, he let me use is for an hour or so one afternoon.
On the way home from our outing we stopped at my favourite camera shop and ordered that same camera for me.
What a pleasure to be able to "shoot" all afternoon with little or no pain in my hands. The weight made all the difference for me!
Today the E-M1 has been promoted to a "grandkids can borrow it" camera. For myself I now have the OM-D E-M1 mark 3 and have the same pleasure taking photos without pain in my wrists and hands.

I did also buy an adapter so that I can stil use the lenses I had bought for the E-5, but will only use them on a tripod to "save my hands."

I agree that constantly reading about how good the mirrorless cameras are can become tiring, but to me it has become "God's gift to me!"

As a point of interest which mirrorless camera do you us?

Hey Mike, I returned to film around 2010 upon inheriting a Canon AE-1. A bit of GAS had me cycling through the AE-1, an F-1 and then an T90, while adding FD lenses that were more available and more reasonable back then, than now a decade later. But, when I added an EOS 1v, I saw how poorly focused were far too many of my film images without the AF-assist.

As I was shopped for FD lenses, I was coming across a lot of demonstration examples of those lenses an Sony bodies. The 1v had me to the point of unloading everything FD / manual focus related. But, since my standalone LR6 supported RAW files from the Sony a7II, I went to KEH and bought a bargain-rated body. I sold off all the manual focus bodies, kept only a small select group of FD L-series lenses, and the rest of my mirrorless enthusiasm is history ...

Without a doubt I would change to mirrorless again.
I won't repeat CHG_CANON's wonderful list of reasons, but they are accurate.
I will also add that through a firmware update my Canon RP was updated to a VERY rapid and accurate Eye focus.
David Martin also offers some sage advice also: "You should select the mirrorless model of your dreams that fits your budget, and rent it for a week."
Mirrorless and RF Glass make me . . .

Edit: I too was a mirrorless skeptic.

I quit being afraid when I bought a mirrorless camera and none of my old DLSRs burst into smoke.

To Paul's comprehensive list I would add the following based on my R5:

1. Focusing is quicker and more accurate, with automatic focus on the eye a potential game changer

2. IBIS is cumulative with the IS lenses to extend the range of sharp handheld images

3. The automatic focus bracketing program eliminates both shutter shake and mirror slap. This eliminated the 2 second camera settlement time I allowed between shots. Outdoor macro stacks now are completed in mere seconds meaning there is less chance of wind or changing light wrecking the stack. Although I have not clocked it, a stack of 25 images seems to be completed with my R5 in less time than it would have taken me to stack three images the old way.

4. The high frame rate, good ISO performance, high megapixel density in a full framed body means that use a single body different types of shooting, where I used multiple specific bodies for specialized tasks in the past. For example, I no longer need my 7D Mark II for birds.

Pretty good, but nothing else?

If I were getting paid to shoot, I might be tempted to switch to mirrorless, but I am squeaking by with my old fashioned DSLR. $1,000+ is a lot to spend for gains that wouldn't matter to me. Sometimes, being satisfied is good enough.

Yes, Canon makes some really nice mirrorless camera's, some what better than even Nikon for now.
But for number of mirrorless camera designs available on the market, and for innovative specks, Sony is the leader for now. Tomorrow is another day. Let the disagreeing talking heads begin there posting. For it won't change a thing, Sony is still number one for delivering an advanced product ahead and better than the rest, for now. Look in your rear view mirror Sony, Nikon is comin for you.

I have been shooting Mirrorless since 2008. Every camera I have owned has had that ability. Seems like Sony has some catching up to do.

Nikon user D5200 D800E to Z50
Advantages
Focusing in dim light
Noiseless shutter
Able to save jpg while filming
Histogram visible prior to shutting
Disadvantage
Feels more plasticky even ZfC which I also bought
More electronic less “Camera” feel
