Really unfathomable how you chose your survey categories. Most of them are quite unrelated to making money.

You’re just forcing all the actual working photographers to lean heavily on “all other photos”. You give BIFs it’s own category but acoarst BIFs make no real contribution commerce.

Entertainment Quotient: Medium High.

Just bitter.
And rude.
I chose the questions, you can just move on instead of being ignorant.

Yes, nobody, not even the most talented polymaths in photography shoot all categories. The proliferation of cameras in everyday life has swamped the world with images, cheapening the value.

At one time or another, I have shot all these categories and been paid for it in my 47+ years as a pro, plus many categories not listed, including war conflict. .

Cheers

Just wondering what actually has any monetary value and especially enduring value to those besides the photographer alone.

Edit: some people overthink things or do not know. So to help read below:

If you do not shoot a category then ignore it.
Very simple.
If all you do for money is weddings then just say weddings 100%
if two categories then say 20% this and 80% that.
So simple that anyone can do it

I have been printing large canvases and paper prints for local artist up to 44" x as long as they need on 2 Canon large format printers and for myself with about 35% landscapes sea Birds on the ground or water and on nests with chicks 40% and all other animals including a lot of alligators . The rest a lot of sunrises and sunsets on the water and beaches very popular being here in Florida probably has something to do with it . Request for Manatees is there but requires getting wet in the coldest of days here few do it . Tourist want landscapes of sunrises on the beaches , Manatees looking cute and Alligators looking mean , a lot of Florida Gator fans I guess . If people see you with a pro style camera in the management areas their first question is "seen any Gators . Popular sizes !2 x 16 gallery wrapped canvases they fit in carry on luggage . 18 x 24 for most birds , 24 x 48 turtles on logs and Gators 20 x 50 or 60 for sunrises land and ,waterscapes . 40 x 60 of rainbow springs and 3 sisters spring where the Manatees Gather here on the Nature Coast .Most popular are Gallery wrapped Canvases for sure . My last sales when I have time to shoot and print for myself were of 2 manatees nuzzeling above the water was 24 x 48 and a Group of sunflowers 24 x 48 .Sold within a week at a Gallery . This time of year lots of sales for the holliday season 2 days ago a customer of mine had me print 8 turtles on a log 24 x 48 , 2 canvases of a Great blue Heron on a nest 19 x 24 , 2 12 x 16 of a baby gator with a damsel fly on its nose , another canvas 24 x 32 of a sunrise coming through a large live oak in a farm field with wet dew grass and a layer of fog behind the tree . 2 sold in a gallery in cedar key the rest sold at a 1 day art show in Invernese .I find it better to print for multiple artist as every sale they make is a sale for Me .

Probably 90 percent of my income is from Sports and news photography. Probably 75 percent sports and 15 percent news. The other 10 percent comes from weddings, senior portraits and the like. Occasionally sell some kind of nature photo, usually in a large poster with a frame and glass. Could do better at that if I had better marketing skills. Every once in a while I make some money from rock or country music concerts, but that's just something I do for fun in my spare time.

Action sports shots don't require much marketing. Just put them on a website and let the people at games know where the website is and they will order what they want, generally photos of their kids or grandkids.

There is also pretty good money in rodeo photography. Once again, not much marketing needed.

From my friends that make money from photography it seems like most money if you are good enough is wedding photography, but I hate it so I only do about one a year, generally as a favor to someone I know. There is also a booming market in youth sports photos. They don't even have to be action shots. If you can get the contract for something like a youth soccer league and then shoot team photos of each team and an individual shot of each kid with a ball you can make several 100 dollars from a couple hours of work. Just keep in mind that there are a lot of people fighting for the same contract, but once you have it and they like your work they will generally rehire you year after year.

There is also some money in product photography, but that in part depends on where you live and what contacts you develop. The key to making money from photography is primarily marketing and secondarily the quality of your work.

Since most of my income is from shooting for the local paper, I was full time prior to covid, now part time, I don't need to be a good marketer. Just need to deliver photos that are properly exposed and in focus that tell the story of the game they are from in a timely manner. Most of the news photography I shoot is auto wrecks, fires, and low light stuff. They usually send someone else to daylight events. So, I will shoot the nigh time parades like last week's Christmas parade, but the daytime parades like the Fourth of July they will send a different staff member.

Six basketball games and a wrestling match last week. Three games and a wrestling tournament this week. Then take a couple of weeks off to go take some landscape photos in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona before seriously hitting the sports photography after the first of the year.

In 2019 the average wage in US was 51,916.27. Who made more than that from photography?

It’s been 20 years I’d say since you could make real money from photography.

Break down on all things involved being a photographer in 2021 to an hourly rate and on average it’s got to be one of the worst paid jobs in the world.
