Beware of Adorama. I never received the camera I purchased.

Thank you everyone for reading my account! I hope this helps people at least as a reminder to research where you buy from. If anything happens, or if they do anything to try to make the situation right, I will make sure to add that to this thread as well. It’s only fair to post the good with the bad.

Sorry about your experience. I always sell on eBay. It's gone in a week, and I have the money before the item leaves my house.

Thanks for sharing! I was looking at Adorama for a major purchase and will head elsewhere. Good service counts for everything.

Thanks Jerry!

I used to only sell on EBay, but I had an issue with PayPal at one point and haven’t used it since. I’ll probably go back to that after this last experience. My local camera company Hunt’s Photo and Video has been really good with trade in pricing, but I fell for the high quote from Adorama and then again when they assured me that they would make sure I got everything I wanted. But I’ve done business with them for years and never had a reason to question them until now.

If the packing slip in the empty package that you received listed the serial number of the Fuji they were supposed to send you, they should be able to check their Fuji inventory for the camera.

How sad……I just read a few of the complaints on TrustPilot…..not only is ‘Nancy Miller’ not a single person - an ‘all-American name’ was selected to front the customer service people serving you from the Philippines - but the so-called ‘CS Ambassador’ (a title I chose to describe what I grew the role to be), uses copy & paste expressions & contrite apologies lifted directly from responses that I wrote personally in response to individual complaints.
The used department official policy is to give over the phone inflated offers for used gear. I repeat, it is used department policy. They figure that once you send it in, and it’s been ‘evaluated’ - & you are told it’s worth $200 less than expected, you will feel it’s too much trouble to ask for it to be returned.
They receive thousands of used items every week….. the profit they make this way is eye-watering….

And yes, returned items are repacked carefully & sold as new.

And ‘competitions’ are run merely to harvest emails, & it can be literally impossible to unsubscribe from them.

When I joined Adorama they were floundering & I slowly rebuilt their reputation- not with boilerplate emails, but by encouraging the business to change policies & practices.
Then the founder of the business retired & the person appointed as CEO was the idiot who brought down Sears. From what I saw, he had zero interest in the business itself - he was there to ‘clean up’ his resume. He detested me because I challenged the vile marketing practices he introduced.

3 pieces of advice:
Do not believe a single word from the mouths of the used department people
Do not give Adorama your email address
Do not believe that the CS people care about you - they do not.
How sad……I just read a few of the complaints on Tr... (show quote)

Thanks for shining an even brighter light on this.

The packing slip didn’t have the serial on it, but I called and after hanging up on the first person who said why should I give you the serial number if you have it on the camera (he was a particularly colorful character), after a bit of persistence I was able to get the serial number for the police report and the filings.

It’s been an experience!

I too appreciate the warning. Having done business with Adorama in the past I was unaware and unsuspecting of these more recent issues.

Trustpilot (which factors in the age of the reviews in its rating) gives Adorama 2.8 out of 5, whereas Abe's of Mane gets 4.5 out of 5! This corroborates the consumer rating information from the BBB web site, but with a larger sampling.

Many threads here on UHH routinely include Adorama in a list of reliable merchants; evidently this company should now be stricken from such listings.

The used market ratings are even more dismal -- 1.67 out of 5 based on almost 18,000 reviews.

Thanks for posting your experience. I've always felt like Adorama was a bit sleezy. Probably the reason I've spent a few thousand with them and tens of thousands with B&H. Just a thought but since you have the serial number it might be interesting to contact Fuji and ask if anyone has registered that number for warranty. I'm sure they'll not give you the person's info but pointing out the fact Adorama is a fraud (especially if they've sold your camera) might get Fiji to do some digging. I wish you the best of luck and Adorama just lost another customer.

Did you use a credit card that you can do a charge back complaint?

Curious: you took a photo of the unopened box before you opened it? Why?????

Have you tried going up several levels to upper management/store ownership?

If you paid by credit card, call the issuing bank and explain the situation to them. They might withhold funds from Adorama and refund your money. I have disputed charges and my bank has helped me.

So sorry to read that this has been your experience - The used department’s shenanigans was one of the reasons I left Adorama.
(The other was the spam mentality of the marketing team)

But it seems not everyone has noticed I no longer work there, as a kind soul sent a pm to let me know about this post!

Helen, a huge loss for folks, that you are no longer with Adorama. Yes, the used departments shenanigans have touched many, including myself, to such an extent that I would never trade any used equipment with them at any future date. I hope things are well with you in your new job. You always seemed to try to do the right thing for many of us who called on you at Adorama, so thank you for that. The Age Group, is lucky to have you on staff.

Sad story this!! To the OP - Don't give up, stay after them. I've been a customer in the past and was always happy with their service. Lately not so much (I'm not sure why, but they just weren't pulling me in like they used to). After reading all the additional info and notes from HelenOster I would be scared away from any purchase over $25 and would not sell/trade anything with them. Like others, I sell my own gear 100% of the time now, as the sell/trade services of all the major resellers result in to much loss to justify this method (for this person - ymmv). Thanks to HelenOster for sharing her view of the issues, hearing that the "new guy" was the Sears Killer doesn't surprise me....this kind of "business Management" has killed off and/or devalued many big american companies, and is a big part of why so many things come from outside the US now..... those ""Business Models" have done this to us.
