Once upon a time, photography was associated with the really cool sound of a motor driven film camera advancing the film. Then, digital photography came along and took that cool sound away.
Photography can still sound pretty cool in a studio environment with a bunch of studio lights all firing. Unfortunately, it's not a sound all photographers get to experience.

So what sounds are left? Well...we have the autofocus confirmation beep! Now, the beep has often been regarded as "not professional" and some photographers will cringe if they hear it.
There are also times we do need the camera to be silent but there are also many times we do not.
The beep is actually a helpful sound to inform you focus has been achieved. It really doesn't deserve to have the poor reputation it does as it can be a helpful tool.

I have decided I really like the confirmation beep sound on my Nikon D200 and it's quite cute. I'm going to turn it on and enjoy it! With our fun sounds being taken away and with mirrorless cameras looking like they will soon remove the majority of sounds from photography, I'm making the most of what is left. I am going to shoot with the autofocus confirmation beep on.

Do you beep or not beep?

I damage my camera eye due to welding a few years ago and still use it for most of the time, no longer can I confirm the focus therefore the beep. I concentrate more on wildlife and nature and most of the times I am alone but when I am sitting at a water hole and there are other photographers, I switch off the beep and shoot with my good eye! When I am very close to elephants and lions in the bush I do switch off the beep and use the good eye, difficult but I do manage. My irritation is at water holes where other photographers with their big lenses (famous know camera) shoot rapid fire, sounds like a canon! It's so loud! I do shoot rapid but some how its way softer than theirs even when I do wear my artificial ears! The beep is handy for me. But on a more public game drive the most annoying sound are cellular beeps! They just go on and on and at slightly low light their flashes!

I don't either! Harry PS I've been shooting for over 50 years. When I need a "beep"
to tell me anything, I'll just quit. Harry PS I may not be the best or the smartest but
I like to think that I ain't the worst or the dumbest either. I'm just a middle of the road
amateur with other hobbies that take up a lot of my time.

I had a friend a couple of years ago who had her D5600 set to AF-S (beep). Because she refuses to understand the limitations of AF-S she's constantly sending the camera into Nikon for repair. According to her it has problems focusing. I've told her to switch to AF-C and she says she does not like the sound of her 70-300 constant focus noise and feel. You cannot fix stupid.

Using many different bodies I couldn’t ever recall thinking about the beep or turning it off but it’s never there so I took a look under the hood.

Turns out when I get a camera I set BBF and Silent Shooting right away. For the latter it’s really the shutter that I care about but there’s apparently silent shutter as a separate choice and also silent or stealth shooting which is a package deal that includes the shutter, the flash, etc and also mutes the beep.

So I’ve never ever thunk about beeps but apparently peeps got attitudes about it and all, 8 pages so far. This is great !!! Hire the handicapped ... cuz they’re more fun to watch ! YuGoUHH !

I beep. As we get older, our eyesight isn't what it was in our younger days.

If I could get it to chirp like a bird, that would be OK...but no, no beeping beeper here

I relish the quiet serenity of my sojourns into the natural world, blending in and not drawing attention to myself. This is absolutely disrupted by the focus confirmation beep either on my camera or any cameras around me. I have learned to look for focus confirmation AND focus tracking by looking at the viewfinder indicators. When possible I use my mirrorless camera with all sounds turned off. And I stay away from other amateurs that insist on using the beep.

So, to answer your question, I don't beep.

Aaaaw, but it's such a cute little beep Gene. Why not beep along with us happy beepers and have some beeping fun?

Yes! Beeping is fun but there is also sexy beeping and not so sexy beeping. I like the beep on my D200 but the D3x is nowhere near as sexy.

I never thought of, or heard it, so I don’t even know. I am hard of hearing and miss a lot of little sounds. When I do wear my hearing, which is not often, the little beeps and buzzing in a car is an aggravation.

Err… They might tell you a bit more important than having pressed a button…

Just sayin'
