If you check your camera manual for numbering schemes / folders , most Cameras give you some degree of control as to when they will create a new folder. I have had it happen to me on a Canon G7x and an OLY TG6 underwater camera, but never on a DSLR. By default the OLY was set to new folder monthly.
Because it has never happened to you before, was ANYTHING done differently? Did one card Fill up? Were there any power issues? Is your camera old enough for the internal clock battery to be weak or dead?

I have actually figured out the issue. I exceeded the 9999 images allowed per folder. Once I got to 10,000 the camera created a new folder.

It is normal on my digital nikons, every ten thousand images, the camera creates a new folder. It doesn’t effect anything, your images are safe and stored as well as ever, just after the given number roll over, it starts a new folder. No harm, no foul.

Did you change lenses? That's happened to me before on occasion and all I could figure out that was different was using a couple of different lenses on the same camera.

No...it is an auto action on the part of the camera when a memory card folder reaches 9999 images.
