To beep or not to beep is the question I ask

I set my D850 to beep at the lowest volume possible. The reason I have the beep on is that I often shoot on a tripod and the camera is set high enough that I can’t see through the viewfinder easily enough to see the little green indicator light that confirms focus. The sound is very very quiet and I can’t imagine anyone around me can hear it. If it does, I suggest they concentrate more on what they are doing so they are not do easily distracted.

I didn't turn off the sounds. I kind of like them.

Once upon a time, photography was associated with the really cool sound of a motor driven film camera advancing the film. Then, digital photography came along and took that cool sound away.
Photography can still sound pretty cool in a studio environment with a bunch of studio lights all firing. Unfortunately, it's not a sound all photographers get to experience.

So what sounds are left? Well...we have the autofocus confirmation beep! Now, the beep has often been regarded as "not professional" and some photographers will cringe if they hear it.
There are also times we do need the camera to be silent but there are also many times we do not.
The beep is actually a helpful sound to inform you focus has been achieved. It really doesn't deserve to have the poor reputation it does as it can be a helpful tool.

I have decided I really like the confirmation beep sound on my Nikon D200 and it's quite cute. I'm going to turn it on and enjoy it! With our fun sounds being taken away and with mirrorless cameras looking like they will soon remove the majority of sounds from photography, I'm making the most of what is left. I am going to shoot with the autofocus confirmation beep on.

Do you beep or not beep?

I relish the quiet serenity of my sojourns into the natural world, blending in and not drawing attention to myself. This is absolutely disrupted by the focus confirmation beep either on my camera or any cameras around me. I have learned to look for focus confirmation AND focus tracking by looking at the viewfinder indicators. When possible I use my mirrorless camera with all sounds turned off. And I stay away from other amateurs that insist on using the beep.

So, to answer your question, I don't beep.

I'm with you on this! Beeps are for cars and video games and why I don't do video games nor honk my car horn. :)

Concert = loud noise… More or less makes no difference. Now, if you are referring to classical music, that maybe enough to get you thrown out.

We’re talking “americana” acoustic music, and a very sensitive spouse.

No focus-confirmation beep from my D750. After hearing a shutter click all my life of taking photos, if I ever had a camera with a silent shutter, I'd have to have a camera-generated sound of the shutter actuation, just for the satisfaction of hearing the completion of the exposure.

No, I keep the camera as quiet as possible as I find it distracting to myself and others.
I'm always very careful not to "Intrude" with my camera as much as I can.
A point previously made is that autofocus/tracking is so fast, and accurate that the "beeps" are no longer desired or required, IMHO.
IMHO, with "Servo AI / Tracking, Eye Focus, etc." mode engaged, your "Beeper" may have a nervous breakdown.
Now that would make me . . . .

The D850 shutter is so loud that I don't need another noise - no beep.
The Z50 is quiet - I like that!

Why beep? If the sound gives you comfort, let if beep. Just another choice in the cameras settings.

Well then! Since we're discussing the "BEEP", why not get into it and drill down a bit deeper.

There are many musicians among us, so did any ever find out what note the beep replicates. Perth the camera menu should have an adjustment whereby one can change the KEY of the beep to harmonize withte singing voice or have it play a tune like the first few bars of Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" or perhaps a bit of Acid Rock! On should be about to download their favourite music into the camera.

There are also many engineers and technical types around here so why not discuss the frequency of the "BEEP along with volume in decibels.

For the folks that are preoccupied with exposure correctness and fear of washing out the highlights, why not a device that set off a klaxon, that is that Ooga-horn they use aboard submarines to signal dive- it can be easily heard over cannon-fire! That's to warn against overexposure!

For those who want the hear the "BEEP" or other sound but not share them with others, why not have a headset or Bluetooth device to facilitate privacy. That way the photograher will not have to let on that he or she is an "amateur" that needs to hear the beep!

PS- For those who want their very own klaxon, there's one for sale on eBay- see picture below! Here's a link:

No beep, and I hated that screaming auto advance. Got rid of all my cameras that had that screeching racket. Silence is where its at for me.
