I have seen this gentleman do the same thing for more than 10 years…wander the esplanade on the East River, sit on its benches and steps, but never sprawl out on the many grassy areas. He is always dressed for the weather in clean clothes, his beard is neat, and he does not have any odor (from 6 feet, anyway). I’ve never seen him with a book or phone.
I have made eye contact with him, hoping to engage him, but decided to stop there. Actually, this is the first shot I’ve taken of him, only because of the vertical and horizontal lines.

Apparently you are one of those who feeds photographically on misery. Not something I care to see in photos, not a photo I would ever take. Three times is the charm, you just hit the Ignore list.

Many years ago when I first began my endeavors in photography in 1973 I asked myself what do I want to share with the world with photography? I had a difficult childhood at home and choose to share the beauty. I'm glad people like Eugene Smith choose to show the misery that others experienced and no fault of their own. Your choice to delete what other see and share what is going on in the world including those less fortunate and your loss!

I understand fully about not liking certain types of photographs… I can’t stand selfies of smiling teeth in front of the world’s greatest places & objects.
Back in the day when I was photography editor of my school yearbook, my then fiancé and I frequently double dated (remember that term?) with Mary Ellen Mark. She was in undergraduate school at the time and had absolutely no interest in photography. That developed when someone gave her a camera while she was in graduate school.
The world lost one of the finest street and documentary photographers it has known when she died at the age of 75. Maybe you should Google ‘“Rat” and Mike and a Gun’ or “Amanda and her Cousin.”
Dorothea Lange‘s “Migrant Mother“ is another photograph of this genre.
Certainly I do not have the skills of these two people, but when I do photograph street people, up close and personal, I ask their permission and give them cash for their time. This one photograph has nothing to do with misery; it is simply showing a human form taking on the shapes of the background.
If you noticed in my write up, he is not a street person, but someone who spends time on the streets.
I only wish the world did not have so much of what you do not like to look at.

It is part of the city/ street photography scenes. Iunderstand your feelings as I hate to watch the news other than weather & traffic if need be.

I have seen this gentleman do the same thing for m... (show quote)

Here is a man who is at peace with himself and his surroundings. That, in our present-day society labels him as "odd" and "out of place". Society could learn volumes from this man. Perhaps it is society that is out of touch with reality. "Pave parking lots and put up a tree museum" and the Earth gets pissed off!

Intriguing photo of an enigma of a person. Your description/explanation clarifies the story well. It is reality and something the world needs to face and correct. Thank you for sharing.

I like the photo. Street photography captures the human condition in all it's forms. He may not be homeless at all but just resting.
