I agree with you Mark. The "RAP" music shares some Baroque thematics, but is boring, and who needs the lyrics! I am a few years younger than you, but I always liked the music from the "30's and 40's", Broadway and Doo Wop. I kind of remember a smoking party celebrating with Stan Getz the release of his album, "FOCUS" in the Miami area back in the hazy early "60's". Oh, the good old days. Columbia Records used to have annual conventions in Miami Beach and the music was great. I still enjoy the "Moody Blues" music; but fear, like you the Broadway genre will be lost. I think the upcoming release of a new "WEST SIDE STORY" will portend whether or not there will be broad demand for classic Broadway or classical music. Stay the course...

Rap is taking a lot of musicians who, possibly, could have been jazz or blues musicians.

I hope you are correct! My youngest grandson loves jazz. He was in the jazz band in 7th/8th grade. I gave him my 52' Bach trumpet.
Thanks,

Good morning Mark,

Enjoyed your comments about your grandson! I have a granddaughter who has been out-performing whatever I was able to do, since her high school years. Now she is a junior at Miami - check out her website at janellefinton.com.

I still have my Bach, but gave up trying to keep the chops in shape several years ago ( I just turned 84 ). My middle son also plays in several small symphonies and occasional gigs in the Chicago area.

Hopefully your grandson will enjoy your horn!

Dave

I like most types of music-Except hip hop and rap. I have recently discovered the Irish and European pop music on You-Tube. I grew up in South Carolina, and like classic country music. Daniel O'Donnell from Ireland has some great renditions of classic country, and a Belgian singer, Dana Winner, has great European pop music. And yes- My neck becomes redder most every Saturday night.

Oh, I agree. The mainstream music, overwhelmingly marketed to the young and played on the main radio stations and subjected to endless back-patting music awards, is appallingly lame, self-aggrandizing, and simple. The most mediocre and forgettable popular music of the '60s or '70s is like Mozart compared to the current crowd that is played over the main radio channels, mind you. A big difference too that you mention is that it is mostly singing. Not a lot of instruments in the songs, and forget about more than 3 chords.
Well, that's my rant.
But there are musicians out there of the "alternative" sort that are quite good. Different. But still good if you go for contemporary sorts of music, that is. But you have to search for them bc the radio will play them only rarely if at all.

I forgot to say--I wish my father had lived long enough to admit that Elvis wasn't so bad after all.

It's Thanksgiving morning. My wife is enjoying her usual ritual - "The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade". I'm on my PC. Occasionally I drift to the where the TV is and catch some of the balloons and "music". I have a fear of "real music" never being heard again. I admit to being a music snob. To me, the current monotonous music scene, is not music. It is rhythm with words. Two, possibly three chords, seems to be the entire musical structure. I was not a fan of the early Rock & Roll scene of the 50's - 60's. However, I eventually converted. My main music preferences are classical, older pop and jazz. I enjoy the required musical artistry to play my preferences in music.

I do not envision "my music" surviving, other than individual libraries of "real music". A real devastating blow to culture. Perhaps I'm wrong and far too critical of the current scene.
Culture and music have a way of lasting, despite the signs of disappearing.

What do you think?

Not being a musician I only know what I like. My music is 50s and 60s Rock-n-Roll. Not because it was good or bad but because it invokes memories of, for me, the best years of my life. Other than that my musical taste eclectic. I like Big Band Jazz, jazz sax but not trumpet; Meatloaf and White Snake but not Guns 'n Roses; Grateful Dead but not Jefferson Airplane; Classical orchestras but not vocal.

You are indeed a brave soul to include Meatloaf in your "likes"
No one is ambivalent about Meatloaf. You either appreciate or really dislike him.
Same holds true for ABBA. Non fans simply consider it "bubblegum" music
It's what makes the world go 'round.

I always find it interesting when I enter an upscale senior living clubhouse or meeting area and 1960s, 70s or 80s music from the Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, etc. is playing. It just does not define the occasion. It is teenage music. It is time to remember we are not teenagers any longer and most of the themes are dated. I am no authority on music but perhaps some classical jazz or ballads would be more appropriate. BTW, I still enjoy many of the pop songs of today.

I am in absolute agreement.
Actually, if you have lucked out and heard any with a third chord, consider yourself privileged.

I’m going to have to disagree with that. I’m 76, and The Dead’s “Terrapin Station” still sounds damn good on a high end stereo. Nothing teenage or dated about good music regardless of the genre. It’s one of the cuts I occasionaly use to demo high end loudspeakers.
