An energy company wants to put a solar farm on over 600 acres of prime farmland in Madison County, Indiana, a few miles from my home. The only people in the county who want it are government officials with dollar signs in their eyes. This project, if approved, will destroy the livelihood of many area farmers, some of whom are friends of mine. Even more crippling is that the electricity produced will be transmitted elsewhere for use.

People do not, apparently, understand that farmland is something that people cannot make more of. The world population is increasing by leaps and bounds, yet big corporations want to take away the land used to feed people. This attitude is senseless.

Solar farms, go away!

Windmills might be better? At least they can farm around them, especially if they are placed in a grid and not helter-skelter.

They tried that here near my home, too. It got squashed before it got started.

Why not find a place in the desert? There is more sun there and it should not matter the distance if the electricity is going somewhere else. Would also help the wildlife with plenty of available shade.

Considering how much oil and maintenance they take, plus the worn-out blades that apparently cannot be recycled, I am not too sure.

That would be better than on good farmland.

If they are still farming the land & do not need to sell, No deal. Let them go find a farmer that wants to sell. They tried that better for the good crap on the Jersey shore several years back trying to take a fraction of the property value to displace people who owned small Beach front or ocean block properties to build up. It went to court, the people won.

Windmills are not better, we have these bird grinders all over Wyoming. They are only being erected because of government subsidies, have ruined our beautiful scenery and kill thousands of birds and bats each year. Each windmill site takes away 3 acres of land, while we are not for the most part farm country, it sure does reduce rangeland.
Besides that the lifespan is about 15 years, and then the blades are being buried by the thousands in the Casper landfill.

As I understand it, in Indiana law, eminent domain comes into play.
