When I was about 12 yrs old, my friend and I found a crow's nest and robbed it of 2 baby crows and raised them as pets. For wild birds they were amazingly cool pets. The only problem was that crows are notorious thieves. If it was shiny and interesting and he could carry it away, it disappeared never to be found. They were fun and would come from nowhere and land on your head or shoulder. They responded to a few words and learned a couple of tricks. My mom claims it could talk. We enjoyed this guy all that summer, but come Oct. George flew away and never returned. He was sadly missed.

After looking at other pics from that time and location I've decided it was a Common Raven instead of a crow. Sometimes it's hard to tell unless they are near each other to compare size. But this side view from a minute earlier does show a heavier bill like a raven.

I was wondering about your initial ID but since we have very few Ravens here in KY and an abundance of Crows I wasn't at all confident enough to call it out.

That prominent tuft of hair on top of its bill was an ID indicator of a Raven at one of the bird links I was looking at.

Anyway, it's a beautiful portrait! I've got a crow project going on now, and can get a murder of four to seven to come in to our driveway food buffet almost every morning. Nothing as good yet as your first portrait, though.

The bird was in shade, so I was lucky to get any of the shimmer on the feathers.

Nice picture of Mr. Crow.
