What you said above, in this post, is true. What you said in your previous post @ BIF being the same as indoor sports, isn't even close. Trix and I are not arguing with you, just pointing out. Your perspective is valuable. Best of luck my friend.

I never said "BIF" ......I said "wildlife/birds" and for all practical purposes ......same. But, you are correct = strictly BIF is not the same.....

Thanks Jules

Shot with a D-5, 24-70mm f2.8 lens @ 70mm, Manual, ISO 3200@ 1/500. My Grandson with Ripon Christian at a Riverbank Tournament in 2016. He Graduate this spring from Cal Baptist with an Engineering Degree. I'm biased, but he really is a great young man that already has a job lined up. It was REALLY fun photographing and watching him play Football & Basketball

Thanks for the info. Great quality.

Exactly correct. No arguing or name calling, just a civil discussion of differing opinions. It is truly amazing how low the light in HS gyms can be. At night, I’m typically at ISO 6400 - 12,800, f2.8 and 1/500.

I have shot many basketball games in the same venue conditions. Post film days, i have used Nikon D700, D500 and occasionally D750 Cameras. The two best lenses have been 80-200 f2.8 and 24-120 f4 Nikon zooms. For a new lens, i highly recommend the 24-120; it does it all at floor-level shots. The D500 is my camera of choice.

Thank you! That 24-120 looks very interesting. I’m going to do some research on that one.

The use of flash is considered a distraction to the players. Generally, the rules forbid the use of flash. The "need" for flash is mitigated by the quality of today's cameras. However, there have been times when I would have liked to use flash.
I do use flash when the seniors are introduced pregame and for mommy pictures before and after game time.
I always introduce myself and my photographic intentions and request permission from the refs. And i do take their picture. I have never been refused.

Too slow unless the venue is well lighted, and then there’s the subject isolation issue, but a fine versatile lens otherwise. You must be shooting in better lighted venues than me.

It’s not allowed for the wrestling tournaments I shoot in my area. Some college arenas/gyms have ceiling mounted strobes that you can trigger remotely.

I shot my kid's basketball games for a while. Also have a D500. I got best results with a 85mm F1.8 opened at F2 and 1/800. ISO was over 3200. I had to sit or stand close to one of the baskets. Sometimes I stood/sat right behind it. However, these are the more interesting shots and where most of the action happens. Rebounds are the best. I used fast burst mode to get the most of the action. I took my 80-200 2.8 to shoot far away, but found I didn't need it. I got my 85mm used from ebay between $200 - $300. Great lens. If you ask nicely to the officials they might let you get a decent spot. Show them the camera so they can see you have no flash. Good luck.

Please arrive at the game early so you get a court side seat. A 85mm will work well.
