The Nikon information is confusing.
The video at Nikon support says use a formatted card to start taking photos after updating the firmware.
How about using a card with photos already stored on it?

That would already be formatted, would it not?
Should not be an issue.
If you feel hesitant, first copy and paste the photos from the card to your computer, external HD, or....
Then with that card in your camera, take w few shots and you'll know right away if it worked or not.

The firmware update may have altered the formatting, so it is possible that the only way to use a "used" card in the camera, is to copy the photos to "elsewhere", format the card in camera, and start shooting.

Once you update the firmware you are usually given the option to remove the update files from the card. The firmware update does not update anything on the card. They recommend using a freshly formatted card 'just in case' something goes wrong.

Since you write to an un-formatted card, seems redundant.

I was curious so I just tried it on my Z7. Photos on the flash card (backed up elsewhere).

o Downloaded the firmware update.
o Mounted the disk image and copied the update to the ROOT of the Flash Card.
o Performed the update.
o Removed the card deleted the firmware update using the camera.
o Replaced the card. All photos are visible.
o Snapped a test shot. Worked fine image was recorded as expected.

Upgrading Nikon Firmware is easy peasy. Just follow the instructions on the Nikon site to the letter. Start by formatting a card IN THE CAMERA YOU WILL BE UPDATING! Etc. Best of luck.

It was a test! Did you get that part? I was curious as to the results. So I did a test.

I’m just reporting the results.

Chill! Did you get the fact that is NOT the way Nikon says you should do things and I would hate to have somebody find that out the hard way? I'm not at all surprised that your TEST worked, but I feel it is important to recommend that folks on here do things the proper way. I just updated my two Z6 bodies yesterday, and I cheated a bit. Everything worked out fine, but no one needs to know what I did. Get me? :)

I agree. Somebody mentioned that they had trouble doing the update even though they were watching a video on how to do it.

The instructions on Nikon's web page are so simple if you follow them line by line. And doing it that way there is no need to put a video on hold while you try to remember what they just said.
