As long as you don't go running in the surf you should be good.

Only change lens with proper protection from blowing sand or the big guy that chases skinny guys with cameras on the beach.

Don't point your telephoto at any of Rlaugh's fishing buddies unless you ask him first. 8-)

Welcome to UHH.
You will encounter blowing sand and salt spray on the beach, even if you don't see it. While on the beach keep a filter on your lens to protect the lens glass. When you are done for the day, wipe down the camera body and lens body with a damp, not wet, cloth.

Wrecked a small digital camera just with salt spray in the air when near a windy beach. Never thought it got even damp but somehow got inside...two hours later dead camera screen....still took photos but no screen...cost to fix....too much for value of camera Suggestion....stay on dry land !

We are back to "common sense" here, protect your camera & lense when needed -
yes - a UV filter is a must - the wiping down after is also a must. If you are going near the spray off those rocky California beach and cliff areas I suggest a rain sleeve where your whole camera is covered with a tightly sealed lens opening - buy them online 2 for $7. and still wipe and clean your camera the salty humidity is just as bad as the spray.
IMHO

You say "beach photos." If that involves scantily clad beauties, watch out for the boyfriend. :D

There are lots of beach-proof, waterproof cameras available.

Here in NZ the greengrocer supplies ones' groceries in thin, strong opaque plastic bags. I always carry one or two in my kit along with a couple of rubber bands. Put the camera and lens in the bag with the lens poking out, then fix with the rubber band around the lens. Water and sand proof - works a treat for me.

Great advice. I have shot a couple of beach weddings and each yeaar a couple of polar bear plunges. On my Canon 60D with tamron 18-270 I ONLY use that lens and will NOT change lenses on the beach.

The Camera is a computer with a glass front and salt will destroy the mother board as well as the cameras contacts & workings. Not right away, but down the road.

My neighbor taught me this trick when traveling and you need a rain cover for your camera. Many hotels/resorts provide a plastic shower cap for their guests. Put it around the camera with the lens poking out. I even carry one in my camera bag. Anything in a storm will be better than nothing and you may still have a camera at the end of the day.
