I’ll second Ft. DeSoto Park. I’ve gotten some great shots at the Venice Rookery but I think January is too early. The places I would add for wildlife are the Celery Fields in Sarasota and Myakka River State Park. Both will benefit from getting out and walking but it’s not totally necessary.

I live in the area and I agree with all of the above. I would also add Neal Preserve in Bradenton for Painted Buntings, if you don’t see them at Circle B.

There are many things to photograph. The sunrise at the Safety Harbor Pier or the Skyway. If you like birds you can go to North Beach of Fort DeSoto and see the dancing reddish egrets or the Tampa rookery and see the beautiful mating colors of the Tricolors. (see a few examples)

Pure photographic magnificence

I live in Tampa, across the bay. I would second all of the spots already mentioned. There are lots of local parks as well. Two others would include Weeden Island Preserve (almost in St. Pete.) and the Botanical Gardens in Largo.

Myakka River State park is a must see. The only place I see Limpkins. Lots of big gators and wild pigs. Also Roseate Spoonbills, Ibis, Plovers and Black Necked Stilts. You can see Manatees on the east side of Tampa Bay at the powerplant.

I use to kayak Mayakka when younger. Tons of alligators. They have a boat tour which will have a lot of birds to photo. Trails and raised board walks. It is a hours drive from St. Pete between Sarasota and Venice.
