RRS. My legs don't slide down/out by themselves. I have to pull them out.I also purchased the leveling base ( I use a fluid head) which makes leveling so much quicker & easy. If your using a ball head with a level bubble or your camera has a level built in , you could skip it. I find the leveling base helps for quick adjustments after moving the tripod & a plus for doing panos.

Theehmann, I use gitzo, manfrotto and I even still have a few tiltall tripods, made by leitz, too.
The manfrotto uses quick release clips, as opposed to the rotating locks on the gitzo and many others.
You may want to check those out.
And, also, there are many terrific tripods available preowned, from eBay, KEH, MPB, roberts/upp, etc.
a lot of these, for sale, tripods were rarely used, and you can get a mint condition set of sticks for a much more reasonable price, compared to new.
Do make sure that you purchase from a dealer who allows returns.

Have numerous Gitzo's, but are troublesome in that get jammed with sand. I have a couple of Sirui tripods that work great and much less expensive!

I have issues with my Gitzo legs as well, so it mostly just stays home. I most often use my Sirui and 3leggedthing. And I just traded my feisol tripod. Since it did not seem to like my bigger set ups.

In some environments and situations tough to do.
They seem primarily for studio or safe environments.
Steady, yes. But weak in bad environments.

Carbon fiber was over my budget but glad it works well.

Carbon fiber was over my budget too. But I just put it off another year or two, saved the previous years' budgets, and bought carbon fiber anyway. Also managed to catch it on sale.

Interesting.... I've used Gitzo for 20+ years and never had any problem with jamming. Of my three, one of them is easily my most used tripod, almost always goes out with me on any shoot and usually gets used. (My other two Gitzo are more specialized, so only taken out for certain purposes.)

Mine. Of the legs unlocks. I disassemble and clean all my tripods once a year. And for the first few months after cleaning and re-greasing. It works fine for the first 10 or so set ups. All the parts look fine. But over all I just do not trust the locks on any of the legs. I suppose I could just replace all the parts. But I just use for a GoPro/web. And just stays at a medium hight.
