My Sony Nex a7 will respond to a shutter press with "camera error" message and lock up. I have to turn off and on to get it to respond. After trying several things I found out that releasing the flash the camera will work ok even without the flash activating. Any suggestions on how to carry on?
Not sure an a7 is worth an overhaul and your description isn’t very accurate.
There’s no specific action called “releasing the flash”, especially without “activation” of the flash.
If you haven’t loaded anything into the C1/2/3 slots on the mode dial then those are all at the as-shipped factory defaults. Try shooting in those modes if they’re virgin. If that resolves the error issue then a user error is indicated.
Even if the C1/2/3 are not virgin, they most likely represent a controls set up prior to your current situation, so give then a try anywho !
If it’s not a user error you’re back to the money question. A fresh a7 with 180 day warranty is about $700 at KEH.
The APS-C Nex-7 from 2011 is not the same as the full frame A7 from 2013, and is certainly not selling used for anywhere near $700! It's about $250. But it's not really clear what the the OP has.

True. He’s unclear about much. But now that you’ve brought up the Nex7 as a possibility instead of an a7, I think the OP *does* have a Nex7 cuz that explains his comment about “releasing” the flash but without “activating” it. (An a7 has no pop up flash, the Nex7 does.)
So thanks to your comment my latest advice to the OP is to junk the Nex7 and buy mine (not joking ...). Mine has 1750 clicks on it. Thaz nearly new !

Two Things to try:
1: Turn the Camera off, Remove the Battery for 30” and Turn the Camera back On.
2: Turn the Camera off, Remove the Battery & for 30” hold down the Shutter Button.
Problem could be SteadyShot or in other terms Image Stabilization.

How do you Remove the Battery for 30 Inches?

The quotation mark is also used to designate seconds.

Just to bring you (and whoever else) up to speed:
“ = Seconds
and
‘ = Minutes
(Kinda like inches and feet but it’s time instead of line length.)
What do you have for sale?
