Here's a case where a photographer was robbed after someone followed him for 40 miles.

One must be situationally aware at all times. As was stated in the article, he became aware of the culprits while out shooting pictures.
Criminals most always make their attacks when the victims are unaware of what is about to take place.

Hi UHH Members,

The "hobby photographer", victim, in the ABC7 news clip was very fortunate in that his chase and bumping into the getaway car occurred in Fremont and not in San Francisco.

At this time, very unfortunately, in my opinion I strongly recommend all photographers use a camera phone rather than a DSLR in taking pictures in the San Francisco Bay Area. "Composing a photographic scene" is a distraction from your situation awareness, and can put one in harms way in a matter of moments.

If one wants to take your camera and/or personal gear, please let them have it and don't fight. ...just consider it as an "unique experience" in the Bay Area.

Take care, have fun, and be safe.

One shouldn't get too paranoid over this. It's an isolated case. If you read a news article titled, "Man steps out door, gets struck by lightning", that doesn't mean one should fear going outside. Of course it can happen. But the chance that it will happen are fairly slim.

This is posted in the wrong section anyway. Links and Resources is the proper section.

"But the chance that it will happen are fairly slim.", ...maybe in your hometown in Philadelphia, PA.

As an Asian male, 74 with white hair, please use your camera (iphone) phone when taking pictures in San Francisco and have a "wonderful and safe" experience.

I saw that on Tony Northrup's channel. Scary. It's good they got at least one of the guys. They do an interview with the victim.

Again, UHH members, ...be safe and have a wonderful time when you're in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Please do not fight for your personal properties, ie camera gear, bike, watch, etc, and for certain, do not chase the perpetrator. In San Francisco, the SFPD with not chase a vehicle for property crime.

IMO, call the police and your attorney, if necessary, and don't do interviews.

It's serious and sad, ...read the comments below on the above YouTube link.

Take a MF film camera. A quick clout round the head with a Koni Omega Rapid will see off most people, and if they do get away with it they won't want to carry it far.

I CCW too, but didn't mention it, because it is not an option for the common folk in Commiefornia.

Thankfully, the State of Missouri is "Constitutional Carry" which entitles me to carry both a camera as well as personal protection....and no, I would not shoot someone trying to snatch and grab my camera however if they are armed things could become quite exciting for the both of us for there is a likelihood that even though they take my camera that they would not want to leave a witness.
