A notable photographer, during a youtube presentation, stated that beginning amateurs tend to be gear-oriented. Advanced amateurs to professionals tend to be concept/technique-oriented. I tend to agree with him. I could care less about what camera was used if the photograph is of good quality and photographic techniques are used in producing that photograph.

I agree also.
I don't care what camera, how many lenses, what editor someone uses, or any metadata, simply the final result.
I'm impressed by the result, not what they used to obtain the result.

I see a lot of what I call herd mentality. People craving the latest best equipment and everybody rushing this way and that way as new cameras are introduced. Perhaps its a result of marketing.

I guess it's good for manufacturers when people to buy the latest gear.

Quite honestly I could afford the latest gear but given what I shoot, I don't see how that will improve my photography. I know some people will gain from the latest greatest features, and that is good, but I'm not one of them. So I'll just sit back and enjoy the show.

I will agree that it’s gonna take more than a new camera to improve your photography. 😜🤪

I couldn't agree more. I taught a course earlier this week at a renowned public garden, and I was astounded by the number of photographers who were shooting with new Nikon mirrorless cameras. These folks, many of them new to photography, were using the latest and most high-end gear. I shoot with a D800E and have decided to stick with it because it gives me the images I want.

I really do urge photographers, especially new photographers, to go easy on GAS and work on the basics of composition and subject choice before seeking to have the newest, most impressive gear in hand. Just sayin'...

Doesn’t it kind of make sense that someone new to photography would have a new camera?

There are some great posts in this thread.

It's difficult to find so much common sense in one place but "hogs" have demonstrated in this post dthat it's possible to have a sensical perspective and common sense.

If you can't make the photos you like with today's gear, look in the mirror and resolve to work harder- take courses and shoot more.

How old you think Paul is if there was DxO when he was a little boy?

I'm guessing Paul is near our age and if I'm right, there wasn't even an internet at that time.

What cracks me up is the mentality of all these fossils filling 10 pages of grumping and grousing about advancements in technology and thumping their chests with an air of superiority about how they’ll never buy one.

Hey I'm one of those fossils and I love the new technology. And I have been shooting mirrorless since circa 2005.

I try not to grump and grouse too much. ;)

Due to technological advances, one can now get a shower head with a Bluetooth speaker in it.
I'll never buy one.......

I find it puzzling that some folks seem to think upgrading equipment is so awful. If no one does, then there are no new cameras after a period of time. Do we really want that to happen? I say NO.

I wonder if criticizing folks who upgrade is a bit of reverse snobbery. Again, if you don't want to buy new gear, fine, don't buy...but there is no reason to criticize folks who do want to upgrade.

I don't think it's awful, I simply don't require it.

I still like the the DSLR cause you are looking at your subject through the lens.
I don't need 10 frames a second so why waste my money. I still shoot my D750 & D800.
Clarify the main advantage of the mirrorless cameras?
I have heard it requires less lenses because each one has more latitude??

Nobody can deny the high end technology present in new cameras like nobody can deny that modern lenses are superior in quality to what we had only 15 years ago. Do that means that we should be looking for the best? I do not believe so.

In my case, I never bought a new camera, all my camera bodies are second hand or refurb. Indeed none of them is new, my Olympus EM-1 original version is slightly more than 10 years old and I already forgot how old is my D7000. For the type of photography I do both cameras satisfy my needs. I have been watching out of curiosity videos on the new Nikon Z9 and I admit it is a hell of a tool with an incredibly good AF system and shooting rate. I am not entirely familiar with that camera and I bet it has more technologies than all of my cameras together but I do not need one nor can I afford it either.
It is still the photographer who makes the images, the camera is only a tool.

Perhaps I am a rare human being because I cannot remember suffering of GAS.

Precisely why a good friend of mine who is a former Los Angeles Times photographer of over 40 years, shoots with an "ancient" D80 with a Tamron 18-400 and he gets AMAZING images. Doesn't seem like a great combination by today's standards or what many think they need. It's like you said, "shutter, aperture and a good eye is what makes a photo." After 40 years of being a news photographer, he has developed that "good eye" you refer to. A Z9, with all of its whiz-bang features, will not improve his photographer in the slightest.

It’s not intended to do that. Hogsters always seem so clueless about about advanced tools.

Take your opening sentence and mentally picture a device that does exactly that, but does it much more accurately. That is what EVF is all about.

Take your last sentence and discard it. Don’t know exactly what you heard from whom, but as written (more lens latitude ?!?) it’s a meaningless string of words.

As to 10 FPS, thaz nothing. 30 to 60fps is much more useful. The more frames you can cram into a mere blink, the better ... better meaning sharper.

Not all, I would say some though.
