i just got a nikor 28-300 and love it. it's an fx lens but will work on your camera and behave like a 42-450 with the crop factor.
I use the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 and love it. Sold my Nikon 80-200mm F2.8 to buy the Sigma after I tried it out. I have had excellent results from all 4 of the Sigma lenses I own.

The 28-300 is a totally different lens with a different purpose, but I've heard it's great.

I need to borrow that 28-300 from my boss sometime...
Thank you for your replies! Will this lens give me good results on my Nikon D90?(I know it's not a top end camera) I will mainly use the lens for candid portraits and have heard it's better to spend your money on a good lens than a better camera????
By the way.. I love the expression you have captured on your pups face GoofyNewfie.. gold.

What about the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8? Has anyone used, have or tried this lens? I thinking of buying it as Canon does not have anything in this range.
was torn between the nikon 70 - 200mm 2.8 and sigma 70-200mm 2.8 tested both lens. Bought the Sigma and have been very happy with the sharpness and the quality build.
I am also considering a second hand Nikon 35-70 f/2.8 lens.. would cost half the price of the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8.. pros and cons appreciated.

They are very different lenses.
I find the longer length better for portraits.
Your D90 is no slouch. It has the same sensor as the D300s and in anything other than low light situations, it would be hard to tell what camera took what photo. You can go a lot with 12megapixels, probably everything you need to.

You are absolutely right, always go for the better optics. And about the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 it is a fantastic lens. If money is no botheration, you may also consider Nikkor 70-200 F/2.8 VRII.
I have and have had several different Sigma lenses...you can't go wrong with a Sigma lens.
