What surprises me is the plethora of Nikon equipment that is for sale. Why is all that gear for sale? IS it unwanted? Is the seller making room for newer things? It seems similar for Canon and a few other makes, but I seldom see a few of some makes, Pentax for instance. Just a musing and wondering.

Why are there so many Chevies and Fords for sale ? And not many Mitsubishis ? I think probably because there are more Nikons, Canons, Chevies and Fords that have been sold and (many) fewer Pentax and Mitsubishis. My guess.

Today (10/24), four sellers have a total of six posting for Nikon bodies or lenses, and IMHO none of contain all the information that I look for when purchasing. I have done my share of buying and selling, and I need to see:

1) USA model? Nikon USA only repairs or services products intended for the US market. For bodies, this is easy to tell because the serial number almost always begins with the number “3.” For lenses, sometimes the serial number starts with “US,” but if not, the pedigree needs to be demonstrated with paperwork, etc. To me, repairability is important.

2) photos of actual product, not stock image. A photo of the camera serial number takes care of issue #1.

3) Box? Most postings mention or include photos of the box in pictures, but some leave us guessing.

4) Shutter count for cameras. A must, like mileage for a car.

Pricing is up to you, but you should check with ebay and other sources of used gear to see if you are in the ball park.

Good luck.

Pentaxians love their stuff! They wouldn’t sell it for love nor money!

If you want more information or pictures why don't you just ask the sellers?

We have to assume that sellers leave out this critical information out of ignorance, rather than because they are trying to hide something. Why not spread "best practices" as a post, rather than having each potential buyer go through the effort of trying to learn something that the seller should have made clear from the beginning? I can't imagine an instance in which a buyer would not want to know these things.

I couldn't agree more. Sellers of other cameras should heed this advise as well. Even though Canon WILL repair grey market bodies, it's just nice to know if it is grey market or a US version.

It takes a lot of time and effort to supply all those information and if nobody is interested it's a waste of time.

That's right. Here we have customers demanding 5-star service at discount pricing ...

Apparently you don't get out much anymore. I've been to many places that are well worth waking up the camera for that are well within 500 feet of the parked vehicle, let alone around 1500 feet.

Actually, as a seller, marketing has value. Good pictures, info on use and care, sample photos, short "stories" help differentiate items that may be priced in roughly the same range. If you want to sell something expeditiously you, the seller, need to satisfy and motivate the buyer. Just good business practice.

If there's no warranty involved then it's pretty much a moot point. When it comes to most camera manufacturers, the only real difference between a USA version and some other regions version is the language they loaded into memory. Of all the tens of thousands of dollars of camera gear and lenses I've accumulated over the years, I've never once needed to have something repaired while still covered by warranty. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, it's just never happened to me.

The OP did say Nikon and with Nikon it's not a moot point. If the camera or lens is gray market Nikon won't fix it even if you pay.

What about the folks, like me, who own Canon, Nikon and Sony gear? Are we considered Nikon people? I personally don't consider myself a Nikon person although my daily shooter is a D850. I usually have two cameras available, my D850 and my EOS 5D mk IV.
I do own more Canon gear than Nikon, but as I already stated, my daily shooter is a Nikon. All my "mirrorless" gear is Canon and most of my bridge cameras are Canon. I don't classify people by the manufacturer of the gear they own.
