Has anyone experience purchasing refurbished computers from Walmart or EBay?

I'm typing this on a refurbished M1 MacBook Air 2020 I ordered from Apple Refurbished. It was $250 less than the same spec in a new box, and came with the same warranty. It has been flawless.

I have bought several refurbished/reconditioned computers directly from Apple online. There is a link at the bottom of their website They usually are 10-20% cheaper than brand new, come with original accessories and a year-long warranty. Of course they will be more pricey than what you will find on Ebay or at Walmart.

I have not bought refurbished laptops off of Walmart or Ebay, I've bought two of them from my local (not big box) computer store. The techs repair and refurbish computers on site.

I purchased a refurbished Dell desktop from the above outlet 2 years ago, and it has not skipped a beat from the second I plugged it in.

Not from Walmart or eBay, but two friends of mine each purchased refurbished PC's from Amazon and they love them.

Do a little research on "The Bathtub Curve" of product reliability, and the clarity of why refurbs are usually excellent deals becomes evident. FACTORY refurbs have to get individual attention before the repackaging. They are tested and repaired or refurbished as needed to be certain they work to specifications.

For many products, especially high volume ones, production line inspectors do not check every individual unit. They only spot check. So some defective products make it to consumers.

Be sure that the hardware of the computer will allow at least 1 or 2 more operating system upgrades. I think this is more applicable to Macs than Windows based machines.

There are online work-arounds for putting a newer IOS on an older Mac, but I'm not taking a chance.

Most Macs are good for five to seven years of annual operating system updates from date of computer introduction.

Here are all the models of Macs that can run MacOS 12.0 Monterey (made available this morning, 10/25/2021) according to Apple:

MacBook, early 2016 and later
MacBook Air, early 2015 and later
MacBook Pro, early 2015 and later
Mac Pro, late 2013 and later
Mac Mini, late 2014 and later
iMac, late 2015 and later
iMac Pro, 2017 and later

Beyond that 5-7 year window, hardware has evolved to the point that it would not be cost-effective for Apple to develop newer system features.

Some OS features require new hardware, or hardware for which driver software is unavailable. It's possible that older peripherals are incompatible with newer systems.

NOTHING lasts forever in the IT world, which is a good thing! It might not be great for our budgets, but data security is another matter. Computers aren't like the tools we went to housekeeping with in our 20's that may still work. (My hand tools are mostly from the 1970s.)

My basic set of Craftsman sockets and a Craftsman tool box date from about 1961.

Well, I do have some antique tools from the 1880s — 1930s, but they're useless relics. They were left to me from my grandfather and uncle, and I doubt they used them. The ones I use, I bought in college and later years.

I have bought several products from a company called "Backmarket". (not black), they sell all kinds of refurbished electronics and I highly recommend them. The products look like new, they have great warrenties and the service is good.
