Thanks, I didn’t realize that capacitor swelling was a problem.

I do the refurbish instead of buying a refurbished unit.
It's a good way to save money though .
When I refurb a computer I inspect all the capacitors and replace any that are even slightly swollen.
I replace the hard drive and often upgrade the RAM before reinstalling the operating system and drivers.

Thanks Bruce. EBay is a crap shoot I guess since sellers are all different. Outfits that only do refurbishing are probably more reliable since that is their only job and reputation is on the line.

I have never bought anything refurbished from Walmart and I don’t trust eBay.
I have bought several used computers made by Dell from Micro Center in Dallas Texas. Never ever had a problem with any of them.

My son-in-law bought a laptop from Sears for my granddaughter starting college and when she called Dell to register the warranty they told her it was already registered to another person and that what she got was a reconditioned PC. Sears took it back but you need to be careful with some sales!

What about Walmart or EBay?

Neither produces anything but invoices as neither produce any product. Would you buy a used car from either source?

I would be careful on eBay with "Seller Refurbished" on anything. There are a lot of less then honest dealers on eBay. There are also a lot you can trust, like Dell for computers and Robert's & Adorama for photo stuff.

I can't speak for ebay or anyone else except for Dell and Apple. From both I've bought with excellent results.

Swollen capacitors are about to fail and burst.

I would trust refurbished by the manufacturer. The seller is not as important.

I bought two refurbs - MacBook Pro and 27" - from Apple in 2012. Cheaper and just as good. I'd be leery of refurbs from others.

Be sure that the hardware of the computer will allow at least 1 or 2 more operating system upgrades. I think this is more applicable to Macs than Windows based machines.

I have bought and sold used DELL LAPTOPS for 15yrs- you can buy 6400 series with up graded ram and large hard drives for under 200 dollars from resellers found by google. My guys were in Houston Tx. Dell was always my best choice.
