Herd Immunity? Maybe Not

It's hard getting reliable information from Iran, but it seems that almost the entire population might have had Covid-19, and some people could have had it two or three times. This indicates that there may not be any herd immunity for this disease. (from NewScientist - England)

We have to come up with better terms. I'm not part of a herd. "Herds" refer to animals, not people. Yes, I know that people are animals, but we usually make a distinction, like "corpse" vs "carcass." Another bad term is "lockdown." That term is used when there is a problem in a prison. I doubt that very many Americans were locked inside their homes.

Anyway, things don't look good for Humans vs Covid.

Unless we all just get the #$%*&@ vaccine. It’s that simple!

With the world population closing in on 8 billion, climate change, deforestation, dead coral reefs, over-fished seas, drought, famine, joblessness, and hopelessness, "thinning the herd" might help the planet in the long run.

There are three problems mitigating against longterm herd immunity:
1) neither vaccination nor having Covid produces significant immunity 100% of the time
2) both natural immunity and vaccine immunity to Covid decline over time (just like immunity against flu declines)
3) the virus mutates, and immunity against one strain does not guarantee immunity against future strains

As long as I'm not part of that herd.

"Thinning the herd" isn't necessary. If we (ALL OF US) would stop having too many babies natural mortality would take care of the problem.
