Canon T3i Error 01

I am a new user here on the UH and I need some help. I have a brand new Canon EOS T3i. When I try to use a Sigma 75-300 zoom I had with a previous Film EOS camera I get an error code about faulty communication between the camera and lens. Are they not compatible ? Will I have to purchase a new lens or do I have some other problem ? Thanks

Does this lens have an aperture ring? If so, try setting it to the highest number and see if your error goes away. If it does, lock the aperture ring at that setting.

My Nikon D80 gives and error if the lens aperture ring is not set to the largest number.

Good luck!

Try cleaning the contacts on the Sigma.
(I use a soft photo cloth)
I have/had a Canon Xsi and 3 sigma lenses 28-200, 28-300(sold and working wonderfully on a T3i) 28-80 all work just fine on my XSi.

I received a similar error code once and it was the sensor in the lens that the camera was not reading. It cost me about $175 to fix the lens.

This sounds like the contact on the lens body are not communicating with the camera body. Auto Focus and Focus Tracking are not available for this combination.

Not to worry, if the lens will seat correctly onto the camera body you can ignore the error and manually set the focus with the lens. You may need to replace the Focusing Screen in the camera body to include a "Split Image" (Range Finder) screen to assist in critical focusing.

Exposure settings (Sensitivity, EV, Aperture, and Shutter Speed) are controlled by the sensors inside the camera body.

When my camera gave me the error message it was with a Canon lens. It was just the sensor in the lens that had to be replaced. I have lenses other than Canon without a problem

back of your camera manual under trouble shooting will tell you what your error code means. depending how old your film cannon is, you might not be able to use it. unlike Nikon, Minolta, Pentax or Olympus, cannon changed their lens mounts on their dslrs. older cannon lenses will not work on the new dslrs. Usually any basic question about what something does or dosen't do can usually be answered in your manual.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I previously tried cleaning the contacts but the error still occured. The troubleshooting guide says use Canon lenses. Duhhh....If I were buying new I would consider only buying Canon but really had hoped to use what I already owned for a while. Economic situation being what it is. My lens is maybe 10 years old so not "that old". With this input I am thinking it may be the sensor, so I think I will investigate that. Thanks again all. :-)

Before you go to all that trouble and work, do you have a lens that came with the camera? If you do try that lens first and it will eliminate the camera body as a cause.

When my camera gave the error message. I had taken the camera and lens to the local camera store and the lens wouldn't work on one of their cameras and my camera worked with another lens, so we narrowed it down to the lens. If the lens is 10yrs + old you may consider buying a new lens. I know it's easier said than done. Good luck!

this did not completely eliminate the camera as a source of the error. Had you tried a lens made for Canon that would have solved your problem.

If older lenses will fit the adapter on the camera body you may be getting errors because auto focus and metering cannot function with the newer body model. In that case you will need to operate the camera in Manual mode and make all the adjustments yourself.

Tried an older AF Canon lens and while it didn't give the error it doesn't focus properly even in manual. The shot still isn't sharp. Guess I'll just be saving for that new lens :-) which bites because that was one reason I chose the Canon hoping the lenses I has would fit. Thanks again.

Focus alignment can vary from lens to camera body because of the measurement from the rear element of the lens to the sensor, and/or focusing screen inside the camera body.

Check with your camera supply store to see if they can get a replacement focusing screen for your camera body. this screen comes in many different configurations, each for a specific purpose. You need to look at the screen that has the composition blocks etched into the screen and a split image focusing reticule in the center of the screen.

The etched compositional lines will aid you when composing an image using the "Rule Of Thirds", the split image will aid you in setting the correct focus by splitting the point of focus in half and then joining them at sharpest focus. Good for close-up, scenic, and any image that may contain vertical and horizontal lines.

This Canon web site shows some focus screens, you only need one.
