I was disappointed that he never ran for president. I would have voted for him regardless of his party affiliation. He was just that good as a leader. I can also completely agree with his reasons for not running, he didn't want to subject his family to the kind of indignities candidates and their families must endure. Gotta respect that.

He would have had my vote. To me, his reasons for not running demonstrate that he had the intelligence required of the kind of person we deserve as PresidentšŸ˜³

I think this is the reason that Condoleezza Rice also didn't go deeper into politics. She would have also gotten a vote from me.

General Powell, may you rest in peace. God bless you....

Where are all the Powell's now, they are what America and the world need now. Not these dithering no idea politicians from all parties we have now.

I actually met him during Gulf War 1. I was stationed in Crystal City in Arlington VA and went out running every day along the Potomac. One dayā€¦just north of National Airport I passed this guy in Army PT gear running south along the riverā€¦about 20 yards later I said to myself "that looks like Colin Powell"ā€¦so I turned around and caught up to him and asked him. It was himā€¦running by himself at about a 7:30 per mile pace which is pretty respectable. No bodyguards, no escortsā€¦just a military getting in his daily run. Chatted with him for a few minutes before he turned around.

I wish he had run for President myself.

That's a great view into the real person and not the manufactured and manipulated you see with so many. Thanks for sharing your story. I, too, would have voted for him.

It is sad that he will be most remembered for caving in to GWBush in that very influential UN speech urging the Iraq war which was clearly our greatist disaster (and privately he was opposed to that). He was otherwise a model for all of us to follow.

Another one I would have voted for and as a black woman she would likely have won. Unfortunatelyā€¦her scruples and integrity prevented her from becoming the lying scumbag she would have had to be to be successful as an elected politician.

Groucho Marx famously said heā€™d never join any club that would have him as a member. Similarly, I feel the less someone wants to be President, the better, and that anyone who REALLY wants the job should never be allowed to have it. Powell, through that evaluation, would have been excellent.

Like most of you my age, I've been there, done that & have the T-shirt. For 40 years of my life I was involved with the U.S. Army. First I was an enlisted man, then an NCO & later an officer. I retired after 20 plus years & thought that was the end of my association with the Army. A few years later I fell into a job at The (Then) Tank, Automotive Command in Warren, MI.(TACOM) as a civilian photographer. Over the course of the next twenty years I took pics of almost everything military you can think off.

One day I was ask to take a two to three hour overtime job at the nearby Tank Manufacturing Plant to photograph a VIP on a fact finding tour. No one knew who the VIP was. I was happy to get the overtime, grabbed my camera gear, lots of film & off I went. When I got there I found out the VIP was General Colin Powell who was just appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I have never been as impressed by one man in my life as I was by him in that two hours. He knew more about the process of making the M1 Tank than the plant execs. He treated everyone as an equal, never talked down the the employees, & asked intelligent to the point questions. Most VIP tours I covered were just photo ops & used to enhance the VIP's resume. This guy was all business. At the end he took enough time to thank me for being there. This man was a class act all the way.
Like most of you my age, I've been there, done tha... (show quote)

One of the last of the line that had any class and a man you could respect. Not like the slime we are subjected to these days every day. RIP General Powell. A class act.

I never met him but I was impressed with reports from both sides of the aisle as to his demeanor, character, and honesty. RIP.

General Colin Powell, thank you for your service to our Nation. You have earned your place in history that hopefully will never be forgotten. I personally believe that you would have made a great President and I would have given you my full support as a patriot of country and flag.

With this said, I believe that one must have served in the military commanding troops (not necessarily a general) as a prerequisite to being eligible to hold the office of President for it is the position of Commander in Chief. Not "Politician in Chief". Yes, there are women in the military too so they are not excluded from holding the office.

I heartily agree with all of the positive comments about
General Powell. There are way too few (if any) leaders
like him. I too would have voted for him.

Then, there were the dumb, stupid remarks made about
him today by the scumbag former president. (my opinion).

Accurate opinion. It took him off center stage and he can't fathom not being the center of attraction or attention.
