I read that the 70-300 canon zoom from canon direct is the best. Could anyone provide more details? I can't find a review of that specific lens.

Canon makes more than one 70-300mm lens, I assume you are talking about the L version. I am not so sure that I would consider it the best unless you are limiting yourself to that focal length. The 100-400 II is probably a better all around wildlife lens.

Personally, I don't think the 70-300L is the 'best'. Great lens, great results, but it's large and heavy and not as flexible as the 100-400L II as the 70-300L can't be expanded via extenders. For Canon's best 70-300 at the moment, I'd go with the EF 70-300mm F/4.0-5.6 IS II USM rather than the older L-series version. The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is better than any of the 70-300 options, if you don't mind the larger size, heavier weight and higher price.

I don't own this specific lens, having sold the 70-300L version and the older trombone 100-400L when purchasing the 100-400L II.

The benefit of the 70-300IS II is the relatively model price vs the other options, especially the L-series. It only lacks the all-weather build, but the focus speed, IS support and image quality are cutting edge from Canon.

Then you're back to the 70-300L or 100-400L models, or buy a hood (raincoat) for your camera / lens.
I use extenders for my lenses. Consider the EF 70-200 f/4L IS II (assuming you want IS support). Pop on the 1.4x iii to extend out to 280mmm or 2x to double to effective 400mm, assuming you have an EOS body that retains AF at f/8. There are several 70-200 models, they're all about the same excellent image quality, just with different max apertures and with / without IS support.

The EF lenses work as good or better on EOS MILC cameras. They're going to be cheaper too, especially the abundance of used copies. I think the RF 70-200 f/2.8 IS is a brilliant new design for this zoom range. Alas, it is not compatible with Canon's RF extenders. There are no RF lenses in specifically the 70-300 range, with the RF 24-270 IS covering an even larger zoom with amazing results, just look at the first example from this review:
