My french inlaws lived in Brest. It is a beautiful city, I remember going to the beach with my wife and them and gathering Begourneau (not sure on the spelling) but they are a little tiny snail and are very good with some wine and french bread and butter.

They are deceased now but my former brothers and sister in law's still live there and my former wife is now an American citizen. I still love them as well as France !

My mom's people are from Bern!

Thank you Ridgerunner for looking in on my post up in Normandy - it sure is a lovely place and France has overall so many interesting and varied settings to offer, I can never get enough of it. Again, thanks for visiting.

Thank you Dick - I was stumped for a moment, as "Bern" to me means the capital city of my native Switzerland, but then I googled and found out that there is a place called "Berné" in Brittany, up from Lorient, I assume that is the one you refer to. We didn't visit it but did stay at relatively nearby Carnac and also visited Pont-Aven and Concarneau, both quite charming places.

No problem Dick, no messing up, there are so many towns with very similarly sounding names in different languages all over the world, not counting all the newer places named after old favorite places - it can get very confusing!

I know vey little about Switzerland; my mother was born in 1905 and it was her G'parents that came to USA, so they must have came in the late 1880*90s, My dads folks came from Scotland in about 1860 from the old family says, they came from Inverness. Moms folks settled in Lousiana so guess she was a Cajun??

Interesting, so your distant ancestors left Europe quite a long time ago. From what I understand, the "Cajuns" were actually "Acadians", people that emigrated mainly from France into the Canadian Maritime provinces and then eventually moved down into the South of the US and settled mainly in Louisiana. But I also understand that the term "Cajuns" is used in a wider sense down in Louisiana, not just pertaining to these Canadian settlers. The movements of people and the way they settled in various locations is really quite interesting.
