Cropping is a personal thing and the type of picture or what it is being used for all varies the cropping.
As an example I feel some of my shots should be cropped but the may be used for advertising so I don't as the space to be cropped out could be used for the words in the add.
I see no rules as a fact . Subject and use makes the choices.

I think your crop goes a bit too far, IMHO. I tried it myself and found that if I included the activity on the field, it made a bit more sense. In that way, we could see what he was watching so intently. My crop was at the break in the bench on the left and just beyond the player with the ball on the right. I then adjusted the vertical sizing to bring the image to a standard size, with more of the crowd than the empty field.

I did more or less the same thing, but used a 16:9 format to emphasize the action.

I agree with AzPicLady. I’m a graphic designer and I only see a man standing on the side. You would only use your crop if the article is about the coach. The storyline should be what the coach is so interested in. What is he looking at? I definitely would include the player.

The crop begins when you tale the picture and is cropped according to the picture. Yes. you can plan the crop size when you take the picture, as you shoot a 2X3 ratio camera but want a square picture so you crop in your mind. Every situation is different according you needs and surroundings and you equipment. In short we have no fixed rule for cropping.
