I've got about 1200 vinyl, and a nice Ariston turntable with a very decent high output moving coil cartridge, and an NAD receiver, known for their phono stage and high current/low voltage class A output section, driving an original pair of Von Schweikert VR 4s speakers. This setup makes the vinyl really sound amazing, with amazing warmth, crisp detail and accurate soundstage that rivals systems costing considerably more. The majority of commercially available CD's never sound as good as vinyl on my system but there are a few that are considered "audiophile" quality that sound ok. Yes, totally agree with your kids - there is much to be said about the character in those vinyl records.

Nice audio gear!

During the last century, when I was in high school, one sunny afternoon just before exam time, I needed a break and played hookey from class. I went downtown to Peerless Camera and did so browsing and then went to Grand Central Station to see a "Hi-Fi" demo by a guy name Henrry Klaus. a prominent audio engineer. He, at the time, was running a company called Acoustic Researce (AR). The equipment was rater simple, an amp, a couple of speakers, and a turntable. The talk was about choosing and setting up a stereo system. The most important concept I took away with me that day was his recommendation. He advised you to first attend a concert or performance of your favourite kind of music and try to retain the sound, the atmosphere, the natural echo or reverberation etc, in yor mind. When you HEAR that kind of reproduction for a system and set ir up properly, you picked a winner.

The other concept was that even moderately priced equipment,t if set up properly with proper distance between the speakers, speaker placement, and have them phased as to polarity, are all very important principles. When that is done you have a discernable left and right changed and a phantom channel, that is you get the impression that sound is common for in-between the speakers.

So...in the studio, I have an old McIntosh tube amp and 2 Briggs corner enclosures (they are filled with sand) each equipped with a 15" University Triaxial speaker- all circa the late 1950s. At home, I have a newfangled surround sound system. The amp is made by Denon and all the speakers are made here in Canada by Paradigm. The trick is not to have crazy sound coming from everywhere but to use the front speakers a normal stereo set up and adjust the back aside to speakers to simulate the slight echo or reverberation that occurs in a venue with good acoustics.

I have Vynal, CD, tapes- all era-appropriate. Some of those old direct-to-disk LPs still sound great. I don't call myself an audiophile but I LOVE music and tinkering with electronics. I still go along with Klause's theory.

Film cameras, chemicals and enlarger are what helped make a good life for my first wife and I. Like the film industry they fell by the wayside. Too bad, but a blessing in disguise.

Going back to film has been a adventure to me. Taking a class at the local junior college, is bringing me back to my first passion. Lots have changed in chemistry and film. It is very expensive so have to spend the money. So far the results have been good and relearning old skills. It has been great!

I like the hissing and crackling sound of well used, vintage vinyl on my old stereo, the look, feel, and photos from my F3, FM2, and Kodak Signet 40. But, when I go out on adventures, I always take my D750/24-120 combo and know I'm getting the consistent quality I'm after.

Sorry but nothing beats the thrill of seeing the image appear on an 8x10 b/w print in the developing tray under a red safe-light.

I agree with "polyman", (but my safe-lights have always been yellow...). Just received 4 more rolls of Ektar, and 5 rolls of Tri-x are on the way.

Hope you’ll add a few exceptions to your list, including artists and retirees.

I read somewhere that there are directors in Hollywood who still shoot their "important" movies on film and then do a digital transfer for distribution. Whatever makes them happy.

Actually not much choice. Most all theaters, especially multiplexs, only have digital projectors now. My son was a projection manager at a Regal Cinema when they made the change years back.

Don't think anyone is bitching. Many just like to shoot film and there is no shortage of film suppliers. I mostly shoot digital but on occasion shoot a roll of film. Probably not more than three rolls during a year.
