Could any one suggest a small flash unit to use with the nikon d850 to replace pop up unit on other nikons. I already have the sb700 but would like a smallish pocket size unit.

Metz makes some nice small units for Nikon, have one for my DF. Can't put my hand on it at the moment, so I can't give you the model number. It is TTL. Has worked well.

Nikon 300 or 500 are still available. Also, I've seen many here on UHH talk up the Godox flash units, though I think they are a larger than "pocket size".

Yes the SB-400 has been warmly received by the D850 crowd...
Albeit your SB-700 is far more versatile... by several orders of magnitude.

Why I wouldn't consider the SB-400?

I'm primarily a portrait photographer, and the SB-400 has no sideways rotation thus it can't be used for ceiling bounce for vertical (portrait) shots. That is a serious deal breaker. I love my SB-700 on my D3 and D3x. It has all the functionality a portrait photographer needs.

Think carefully about vertical bounce if you want to shoot portraiture... And yes I know you'll likely have enough pixels by shooting horizontal and cropping... but then again why did you go for a high megapixel body?

Just wanted you to be aware of the SB-400's major limitation.
All the best on your photographic journey starlifer

Thanks for the advice. I had great success with bounce flash with my d7200 and d810. Right now I'm just looking for a smallish flash to use as a fill flash.

I defer to portrait photogs who have more flash experiences. But I can say I do have a godox 350 that I like. Fully rotational head, can act as controller or slave unit etc. takes 2 AA battery. Relatively cheap.

Consider the Godox TT350.

The SB400 is an excellent small unit. The front will swivel up so you can actually bounce this flash making it more versatile than a built in flash. I like to use it when trying to go light. It uses only 2 AA batteries.
