#5 would make it in any competition & as for the surfer pics (1/3/7/9 - they are too tightly cropped.
I am going to put it this way, these are among the best images I have seen here; excellent exposures, contrast, visual design and selection of subjects.
I have two favorites, a hard decision since for me all are fine images although I admit I do not like the last one. Favorites are No. 2 and No. 5.
Do not show these images to your instructor, he could quit teaching.
Southern CA - think of your audience - Surfing may or may not turn them on. (how many have they seen?)
I prefer the human touch. #5 wins there. But #10 is bright and powerful. I don't know how it will play
in CA (it might just be another also ran). All are excellent.

Number 5 was the only one I downloaded, although they are all great. But getting closer to the serene look on the mother's face was more important than the water shots. (And I'm a long ago surfer!)

#3 for action, you can see a bit of face in it.
#4 for something different.
#5 for top rated rendition of what many of us try to do but fail to do with such aplomb.
If I was pushed to one for a 'class' situation I'd go for #4, but I don't think it's the best.
John, thanks for your input and thoughts. Your insights are spot on in my opinion.

I go for 5 - beautiful serenity perfectly presented.
John, I sense a soft spot in your spirit! Thanks for the compliments.

Our photography instructor wanted each student to submit our best photo for critique. I have a folder labeled "my best photos" and went to that to select one. It was difficult but I came out with one. I'm including my favorite in these ten finalist photos. I'm curious if you have a favorite amongst these ten and if my choice is the same as yours.
They all look best in download mode.
Brent,
There is no way for me to choose "your best".
For what it is worth, the rules of a contest I am deeply involved with state the following: "Photographs will be judged on technical quality, composition, originality, and artistic merit. If digital optimization is overdone or poorly done (including over-saturation and over-sharpening), it will reflect poorly on the image’s score. Difficulty in obtaining the photo and the rarity of the subject will only be considered to break a tie."
It is obvious to me that each of your images score highly in each of these four basic criteria (technical quality, composition, originality, and artistic merit), but you might closely inspect each of your shots with these discriminators in mind.
If the instructor's intent is to find some "flaw", that can likely be done for almost any image whether it be cropping, background or something else, possibly trivial.
For me, #2 is my choice with #1 and #3-10 placing very high.
I look forward to knowing your choice and what the instructor has to say. Good luck.

I keep coming back to #1 due to the intense action and frozen in time aspects. Personally, I like the tight cropping.
Great selection, I'd be proud of any and all of them.
Exactly what is that building in the 6th picture. First I thought a church but not I'm not sure? Nice shot what ever it is.
Brent, you surely must sit at the head of the class..! All of these images are exceptional in their own way and if I had to choose only one, it would be the Surfer-Girl first image.
It seems like everyone has a different favorite 😍 I liked #7&10 so you have been busy with classes 😊😊😊😊👍
Excellent series, Brent, I really like #4 and #5 the best, the yellow submarine really stands out.
Impossible choice.......I think you should enter ten different contests.
