Thank you, George. And not that anyone asked, but I took that photo with a P&S then tweaked it in iPhoto. Nuttin' fancy here. <tongue in cheek>

Snap,
I have no problem with point and shoots. I have a G10 that I carry everywhere. This whole thing about what camera is a joke. I might ask just so I can give a informed opinion of whatever the problem.

A bad joke at that! This stupid thread keeps coming up and the same stupid things keep being said which fail miserably to convey the point, time after time. It's so ridiculous as to be downright offensive. I can't imagine what it must be like for a newbie to observe this out of the people they would come to admire and want to emulate.

My purist friends look down at my Canon SX 40 rather condescendingly, and that's fine. I have the features I need, can go completely manual when the mood strikes, and don't have to keep buying additional lenses. Some people take better photos than mine when using their cell phones. On good days, I'm able to get something good enough to make me feel good, but not quite ready for National Geographic or Sports Illustrated.

Looks pretty good to me dj. Are ye a Beefeater then? I plan to get a SX40 so you'll soon have company. I've gotten weary of totin' around stuff that weighs almost as much as I do. I've got a Kodak 7.5 mpixel z712 I keep in the car that wants upgrading and I reckon the SX40 gives me the best of all of it. Sounds to me like you're a wise man, "damn the torpedoes."

Thanks for your kind words. I'm not a Beefeater, but I sure like the way they dress. The SX40 is an upgrade from the SX 10 I used for three years. I came in a little more than $600 less than the Nikon and Canon entry DSLRs. I enjoy simple stuff.

Several pictures that I have taken and posted on this forum have been with my little Nikon s8000, cool pix. It has 14mp and a 10x zoom. It's around 4" x 1" if that. Personally I feel it really takes great shots. It also is the camera that I always have in my pruse, or a pocket. Even if I have my Canon 60D with me, I bring it as a back up.

I can't imagine not having two camera. It's just the way to go, because as you've said, who wants to lug around an extra ten pounds of gear every where they go.

Guess,
You and I are oldtimers, as such we try to help the newbie get the info they need to succeed. Hell I welcome more informed photographers, as I am sure you do.

Absolutely George but you and I wouldn't lump together too well. You've done this stuff for real and I've just been playing at it for several years. Although I've been on the Internet since before there was a www, this is my first forum or chat type experience and I only signed up here because I thought I could learn some good stuff too, and I have. I'm completely open to experts sharing what they know with others, especially me. :-) The problem I have with threads like this is that nothing ever gets settled. What goes on here is like people at the doctors office saying, "be sure and eat a good breakfast because it's the most important meal of the day," and then they don't tell you what to eat to do that. Here, we say "it's the person behind the camera," but we don't tell anyone what that person knows and does that makes them the important ingredient in the equation. That's troublesome. Then, there's those of us who have locked in on that statement and go around repeating it as if it pertains to ourselves when we don't know what it takes to qualify as "that person behind the camera." No wonder it's so confusing to beginners. We have experts who aren't talking and a bunch of non-experts who are. It's, unfortunately, the nature of the beast, but we still need to at least recognize what is happening.

I've been dying to ask you every time I hear you say "what he said". Did you get that from Hoyle's anagrams? My son and I used to play that ages ago and we are the only ones I hear say that very much around here? Other people just look at me kind of funny and say "what?". :) If not, check it out if it's still around, it's pretty funny.

I am not saying that I am offeneded. It's just that (in my opinion) that people give more credit to the camera than to one's ability, skills or an "eye" for photography.

I second that opinion.I hear all the time "you must have a nice camera", "my camera does not take such good photos" etc.

I think once you get to a certain level with your talent, you get to hear this. I for one very rarely ask someone off the board what camera they are using. Unless we both start a mutual converstaion about our love for the hobby.

If Jerry Lee Lewis and Glen Campbell had been around at that time (they actually might have been), no doubt they would have provided the music. That's a fact!

Totally agree with you there, George. My P&S is a Canon SX30 and I carry an SD980 in my purse. I'm "just" an amateur with a good eye, a sense of wonderment and a desire to learn and share. Thanks for your insights!
