Thanks for your input. No interest in lenses that don't come from the camera manufacturer. The tiny number I have tried over the decades have come and gone quickly, as soon as I could afford the real thing. Don't say that some aren't good, just don't care to own one!

That's fine, and I do respect your choice, but I thought we were talking about a new generation of photographer who might want the information to make her own choice.

That 28-70 is very affordable. It was the kit lens but a very good one, altho 5.6 is pretty slow for a rather mild long end (70mm). Mine came with one of my Sony bodies and was already redundant for me cuz I have the 24-70/4.0, so I was gonna sell it.

The three reasons that I kept it may also be your good reasons for buying one:
1. Affordable. It’s so low $$ that it seemed not worth the bother to sell it.
2. Image quality. Surprisingly good, really punches way above its weight dollar wise.
3. Light weight. If the conditions are suitable for its spec’s, I choose it over my 24-70. It’s as if it’s made of helium.

FWIW someone should have questioned your recalling an 18-40 kit lens. Any 18-XXX lens will be an APSC lens and that camera is FF format. It’s possible it’s really the same 28-70 kit lens that I’ve recommended above.
That 28-70 is very affordable. It was the kit lens... (show quote)

Actually you're right. The 28-70 F3.5-5.6 was the base kit lens with the A7. If memory serves, the optional kit zoom was the 70-300 F4.5-5.6.

The young woman is a STEM grad and certified engineer. New to photography, but not the rest.

My Daughter in Law bought a Sony A 7 and loves it. Haven't tried it, but very compact and takes good photos for her. First question - she got the basic short zoom with the camera, if I recall, 18-40. What would be the best next Sony lens for general photography? Second question. I have quite a lot of Nikon lenses and have lent her several. Can't recall which adapter she bought, but all the Nikon lenses I have lent her have only been usable manually. What adapter will let her use recent AF S / G lenses with full function. Thanks in advance, as I know nothing about Sony and research without knowing what to ask is challenging!

The only “full function” adapter is sold under versions brand names, none of which do I recall, but the name doesn’t matter. When you google “Nikon to Sony” just look for the one thaz around $300. Spreading that $$ across my five AF-S lenses at $60 per lens, I’m OK with it. YMMV ... as it usually does !

What does matter is that it’s about 80% functional on my mkIII, barely functional on my mkII, and requires AF-S lenses for best function. AF-D lenses are somewhat useable for MF only. Older lenses need not apply.

Surely a 24-70 not 18-40??

Agreed that the 24-105 is a great lens. As for the adapter - I bought the more expensive Sony adapter (not sure on model number) and it’s kinda hit and miss on which lens it works with. I have a Tamron 70-200 and I can only manual focus but my Sigma art lens works great with the adapter

I suppose it would depend on what she likes to photograph. For me, the 90mm macro would be the next lens. If not that, the 70-200, either f4 or f2.8.

Unfortunately, the info given by OP is not precise enough to give good advice. Is this a used old A7 or a new A7 III? Are we going the used budget route or are new lenses considered?

Then there is no Sony 18-40mm lens. There is an 18-55mm lens, which is the APS-C kit lens. As someone else pointed out, any Sony 18-xx mm lens will be an APS-C lens.

The absolutely best all-purpose zoom is the Sony 24-105 mm, as others have pointed out. It has a great focal range: 24mm is wide enough for most purposes. I have used this lens for over three years and have taken thousands of shots with it--it is a reliable performer. I own several great prime lenses, yet the 24-105mm is the one I use most by far.

I have never used an adapter so I will not comment on that.

I have tow bodies, one with the 24-70/4.0 and one with the 18-135. Good sizes and fairly light weight. Due to size and weight I only use my 70-300 when I really feel like I need to. All are good lenses.

No, I don't have tow bodies. They are two bodies instead.

What is your daughter's budget? I'll agree that overall, the 24-105mm Sony lens is wonderful. But if she is just starting with a full frame camera, the 28-70mm kit lens is a better low price investment. I have that lens as an extra, and would sell it at a lower price (approx. $100.00) than on eBay if she would be able to use it. Let me know!
