I was at Casa De Fruita the other day and saw this unusual cactus plant and flower. My first time seeing one and I've been in California for over 40 years! guessI don't get around as much as I thought...

The cactus looks enormous... but then you got a close up on level... How tall ARE YOU?
Well done ~
The opportunity to capture this was special and I you've done a nice job.

Haha. I been going to Sandy Hook NRA ( north coastal NJ ) for over 20 years. About 3 years ago while riding my bike, on side of the path was a flowering pear cactus for the first time.( Pear Cactus are all over here) First time I saw one flowering. Went back a few days later with the camera it was cut by the feds maintenance crew who cut the grass along the sides of bike path. Haven't seen them flower again until this year. All over from around the last week of may thru the beginning of July & longer if you ventured into the wooded shaded areas. I think a lot depends on the weather &, rain amounts, etc. Nice photo.

Frank, Thanks for your post. No. 1 wins the blue ribbon with me. Symmetry, size, immense healthy cactus, specific eye catching single flower ... Hope one of the UHHs will ID the cactus.

Thanks for looking Barn Owl, and the kind remarks. Glad you liked them. To me number three is a little sharper.
