These are really nice. I'm sure they were aware of you. I wonder how they felt being a tourist attraction! I always wonder about that when I shoot people who do things differently from me.

My understanding is that the choice of what technology to use is one made by the leadership of the local congregation, and is usually based on how it affects the community and their faith. It is not unusual to see some power equipment being used - I have seen mechanical hay bailers being used - although the hay was being harvested and delivered to the bailer using work horses. The Amish generally cannot have or drive a car, but can take a bus or train if they are traveling a distance. Anyone with more detail can pitch in and add to our knowledge..,

I love these photos. Thanks. If you want to find out more about the Amish, read Beverly Lewis books. They are very informative, and you can't put them down.

Excellent shots of the corn harvest. A pleasing series, crappie.

Why is that interesting? Should the engine be diesel?

It is apparently my ignorance of the Amish as I thought they shunned modern conveniences, as the motor certainly is.

Any time a photographer wants to go back in time, go to Almish country and see how they do things.

It is not so much modern convenience that they shun, it's that they don't want to be connected to the outside world. "separatists"

They, the old order Amish and Mennonites, don't particularly shun all modern conveniences. They generally don't keep such things in their homes. That's where the barn comes into play. They don't have land line telephones in the home but there's usually a phone shared by the neighborhood. Not all sects of Amish and Mennonites live without motor vehicles either. There are the Beachy Amish who own and operate motor vehicles and plenty of other modern conveniences, with the exception of radio and TV. There are over 130 sects of Mennonites who all live and dress differently than their old order cousins. There are the black bumper Amish and Mennonites who drive black vehicles with absolutely no chrome. Many "plain" Amish and Mennonites are members of their local volunteer fire companies. Some of them own motor vehicles but hire "English" to operate them.
