I will be enjoying a two week driving tour of the Southwest (Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico) this month. I have to shrink and lighten my load as much as feasible so I'm leaving my DSLR at home and will be taking my Fuji X-E2S and some lenses. I have recently added a 12mm wide angle to my Fuji kit to widen my view on the APS-C frame. So, I have the 12mm, a 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. I'm weighing whether to take the 55-200mm. I'm not looking to do wildlife photography, but will focus on landscapes, plants, nature, and city scenes. Do any UHHers familiar with that part of the country think I will have enough focal length in the 12mm and 18-55mm to cover 95% of my needs? Thanks for your advise.

Look at the list of subjects you are going to be concentrating on. If your DSLR is a full frame camera, then realize you may be planning to take the wrong camera for that trip.

I'm making the same trip in a few days. Flying to Denver. Cannot manage my usual DSLR's (I'm really old), so I am opting for a Nikon D40X, small, lightweight, fantastic resolution. Nikkor 18-140 mm for sure, maybe some other faster lenses, and maybe a 70-300 mm.. No laptop! Trying a Ravpower hub, but I'm not delighted with the fact it downloads files again that have already been downloaded. Maybe I can figure a way around this using my iPhone?

Use your iPhone to manage the Ravpower.

I really like the WD Wireless drive as well. I don't use the Ravpower hub as much (but I do use the Ravpower router).

Simple, cheap, ship 55-200, insured, to your first Hotel - "Hold for Guest." Same on return, you will have the box from delivery - any post office, UPS, Fedex, etc. Don't really understand the issue, air, tiny car, same areas AZ, NM, 2 FX Nikons, 4 lenses + no problem. The only time it was a bit of an issue was when I brought the 80-400 in a separate case - awkward, but I still got away with it.

Wow! Thank you all for your responses and suggestions! I’ve been convinced to pack all three lenses. I do have a smaller backpack that will hold the entire kit, so I’ll leave the smaller gadget or shoulder bag home for this trip.

Understandable limiting gear when flying, or hiking but in a car?

Your only going once so take what you need.

My travel kit includes my d7200, 18-300 Nikkor lens, 18-140 Nikkor lens as a backup lens. A flash. Spare batteries. Cards. A western digital self contained hard drive to put each days photos on. Maybe a few other odds and ends. I don’t want to fool with changing lenses while out and about nor do I want to be weighed down by extra stuff. For a day out I put extra battery and extra card in my pocket and that’s it. If camera or lens fails I am done taking pictures for the day.

The 55-200 does allow for compression in the scene for landscape shots, and singling out portions of the landscape you might find interesting. I find myself using the 55-200 on my Fuji more and more for landscapes.

Even will all three lenses, that is not a large kit. Take all three and do not regret seeing a beautiful waterfall that is not accessible from your viewpoint, and not having that 200mm lens to capture it!

I can’t imagine not having the 200 along. I take more “Landscapes” with longer lenses than short lenses. I love what you can do with compression too. My least used lens is my 12mm. Even my fisheye gets more use than that. With corrections in LR the fisheye simply becomes a super wide angle. Take everything and leave your extra clothes it home. It’s only two weeks.

Occasionally you may need the big zoom to focus on a landscape area that needs to be closer for better detail. Keep it handy. Other the first time you don't have it in your bag, will be the first time you need it.

Having grown up in the area and wandered over most all of it I would go with the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm.
And put the 12mm in my pocket. 12-55mm will not cover more than 50-60% of your desires.
But that is me thinking about my kit and how I use my 24-105mm a lot and at the 105mm end. The 100-400mm was used extensively and NOT on wildlife. I used the 12-24mm then the 10-18mm about 25%.
But again, that is personal preference and use, yours could be different.

Save the 55-200 for your next trip to that area and get the most out of the other two lenses on this trip. Enjoy!

Definitely the 12mMm. I I think the 18-55mm will get the most use. Remember when SLRs all came with a 50mm lens?

My friens pro Charlie Harbutt always used a normal Leica lens. Made a lot of $$ with that lens. Got lots of exercise too. Harry

May I suggest the lens you will most need is the one you left home
