Trying to download pictures from new iphone. It is either a 11 or 12. The pictures download OK to my laptop as empty squares. But when I go to look at them it says, Photos cannot open this file because the format is unsupported. I can see them in the phone but can't load them to the computer. All the past photos from my camera have a label - DSC-####. The pix from this camera have many different prefixes, like CWGT,GGNK, IMG, IQQB, ISAP, OELC, UHMT, etc. all with _####
Anyone have any ideas? Keep in mind I am computer illiterate. BE Specific Please. Thanks
John

Plug your phone directly into your PC’s USB port.

Open File Explorer.

Your iPhone should show up as a separate drive.

Navigate to the directory where your photos are.

Click and drag to a Temp file on your PC’s main drive.

If you have trouble, I will look for the exact directory, tomorrow.

I just got in from rehearsal and am too tired to think!

The folder is labeled DCIM. The format may be HEIF, which file explorer and photo viewer can’t resolve. If that is the case, there are software apps that can convert the files to jpgs.

Do this:
Go to Settings-Photos, scroll down to the Transfer to Mac or PC section, select Automatic. Your photos will convert to JPEG's when copied to a PC.

In File Explorer, the path is:

This PC ~~> Apple iPhone ~~> Internal Storage ~~> DCIM ~~>

101APPLE, 102APPLE, 103APPLE. etc.

Click on each directory to see the photos in it.

The reason for multiple 10XAPPLE directories is that there is a limit on the number of images allowed in a directory.

Good luck!

:)

Easiest way is just to set the default to save photos in the “most comparable” format jpg

Easier than the above: Call Apple Tech Support (it is free) 800-275-2273, the automated voice will ask you which Apple product you're calling about, say iPhone and you will be connected with a person who knows almost all about iPhone or they will find someone who can address your problem. This service is great because it's FREE and the people know their subject.

Where do I find that default on my iPhone? And then how do I actually download the individual pictures to my computer ( be it either a Mac or pc)

Can’t argue with that suggestion! The only method easier than your suggestion is to get some else to do all of this for you!!

If your phone saves the photos in iCloud, then if you have a Mac, you can download them through there.

If you have Windows, there is an iCloud for Windows and it will show you the photos if you have your phone set to save them in iCloud. You can download them from that app. If a photo is in HEIF, it will download a jpg and a mov file.

The only inconvenience I have with iCloud for Windows is that it wants me to sign in frequently. Not every time, just when I'm in a hurry.

Yet another good suggestion for the OP to consider!

I think I have it. I went through Apple support and up loaded to icloud then to windows. I was able to see the three pictures that were the most recent, and I needed. The older pix, taken with an android and trans to iphone I could see in the cloud and that's all I needed. It looks like I will be able to see and download recent pix.
Once again I am in your debt.
Thanks
John

I had an old Windows 98 OS. I emailed my photos to myself. Worked fine. An old Dell desk top that had two USB ports and slow enough to get up and get a cup of coffee before the images transferred using Yahoo mail through my local phone company ISP.
