The photo was taken about 20 minutes before sunrise with a Canon 5d IV and 24-105 II lens without a lens hood. I noticed the unusual flare while processing the image and have not seen this type of flare before. I am just curious if anyone else has seen something similar? I went back the next day to verify the flare and got similar results. Also, the area has a lot of lights other than the ones seen in my photo.

Lights attract bugs, but, the objects seem too far away to be bugs. Bugs attract bats, which seem to be the more likely source of some of the objects. The white-light flare in the upper section of the photo looks like it is caused by the bright lights. Bats are quite hard to see at night but their eyes can reflect light which may account for the camera seeing them.

Just guessing.I noticed, on the exif data the shutter speed for the 3rd pic is .25 sec. At that slow shutter speed all kinds of things can appear that we don't notice in "real " time.

I use a 5DSR with a Sigma Art lens before sunrise . Having some bright lights to deal with will cause this flaring . I have found that stepping down -2 or -3 can eliminate this flair.

With the location changing I don't think it's the camera or lens.

The streaks are bugs from a long shutter. Seen this many times.

I took almost an identical shot using a Nikon about 10 years ago at a McDonalds in San Luis Obispo CA, at night with very high humidity (nearly fog) and had similar results. Captured the aura around lights and starbursts, captured stars, and bugs flying around lights. I took it hand held with a 18-200 VR lens. Still had the same type "flare" you are showing. I thought at time it was caused by extreme humidity in air combined with slight movement since I didnt have a tripod. I don't have the photo available at moment but would be interesting to see them side by side as they are very similar. Love the starbursts.

Your camera equipment is fine. You got some nice shots of UFOs. Or, they could be those new UAPs - Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. : )

How long was the exposure? Could there be objects high enough to be picking up sunlight?

The previous example was soft, this one is sharper. Maybe somewhat due to your “-1”. Possibly some luck as well, cuz the difference is rather distinct, more than I think “-1” would get you all on its own.

This one also has some (non problematic) noise upon close inspection. Perhaps the earlier post had way too much noise filter applied during editing ?
