I had a 3100, when shopping I learned that Nikon created new models based on research of what generation of people were purchasing cameras. The 7000models were designed for younger people who bought up, assumed 7000 to the 7200 was an upgrade, when the main change was the lcd screen. Ask lots of questions read lots of reviews. If you have a few lenses, you will need to choose a crop sensor camera. I am ameture at best but what was important to me was speed. The 3100 is about 4 frames per second, my new Nikon D500 is 9 1/2 fps
and is super easy to use. There are tons of features you probably will not use ever.. I am giving my daughter the 3100 with a couple of kit lenses as I can't adapt to it anymore. Take your time there's a lot to learn. Love my D500

As someone that upgraded from a D7000 to a D7200 I can assure you that the main change was not just the LCD screen. Going from 16mp to 24mp, the processor is 4 generations newer, WiFi was added, both shoot 6 fps but the D7200 has a much bigger buffer. There are many reasons to pick the D7200 over the D7000. I did subsequently upgrade to the D500, mainly for the faster autofocus and frame rate. The D7000 is a good camera. The technology is 11 years old. The D7200 is a very good camera. The tech is 6 years old. While I still use my D500 some, when Nikon finally releases the 200-600mm Z mount lens I’ll probably sell the D500 and 200-500 lens and be all in on mirrorless.

Thanks everyone. I'm now sitting here chuckling at myself because I started this topic because there were so many choices and I knew so little. Now, thanks to all of you, I know a lot more, and there are still so many choices! I think I'm down to the 7100 vs 7200 and balancing more features against more cost.

I love my 3100, but I know there have been a lot of changes since it came out (mine is at least seven years old). I would like to upgrade with a used or refurb that would be compatible with my lenses and not spend a fortune, like less than a thousand bucks. Any suggestions?

I upgraded my D3400 to a D5600 and I've been very happy with it. The D5600 uses the same lenses I had for the D3400.
