My wifa and I were booked for a photography trip to Costa Rica offered by Road Scholar for early November, but we pulled out. As far as I know, the trip is still going. We had booked it a year ago, but made sure that there would be no penalty if we canceled. Going to a place with such a low vaccination rate seemed crazy to us. The only way these trips could be offered, it seems to me, is to keep the participants in such a bubble that you get virtually no exposure to the local population.

My trip is with RS. I made this trip two years ago and you are right. We will be in a bubble the entire time. I'm holding my breath to see if RS cancels the trip. I need to get my photo fit.

To travel in these times requires patience. If you lose your mind because of a delay or a COVID precaution you may not be at your best if things go wrong. If you go without deadlines to get back to you will be better off.
I’ve retired, I have my van and my cameras and we are waiting for South American land borders to open. Until we feel sure they will stay open we aren’t going to start driving south.
The Spanish flu which originated in Kansas took three years to burn out. I’m patient: lots to see in the US and Mexico for now.

Went in April.. Had to get a Covid Test for the trip home. Took an hour at a small clinic located in San Jose. Usually takes about 3 hrs for results but if you're nice and polite they get it done faster. Everywhere we went folks wore mask into the restaurants and places of business. No different than before. You are also Required to have insurance to cover the cost of lodging for two weeks if you test positive for the trip home. You have to stay quarantined for two weeks. Cost about $250 per person. Test was $50 per person.

I hope you can get a refund in case of a cancellation. I was scheduled for an event in PA, but it was cancelled. The event sent me a refund, but the hotel, so far, is non-refundable. I'm still working on that. Get some KN95 or N95 masks for the plane. If I had to bet on this, I'd bet you'll be staying home. Sorry. We won't be free and clear for another year - at best.

My very un-scientific opinion is that COVID will be here for a LONG time....possibly past our lifetimes.....

What do you think the odds are for this to take place.?
International travel is so touch and go.
I'm packed and ready to go.

Don't know, but my husband just got back from 3 weeks in the UK. Lots of Covid tests before, during and before flying home. No other issues. Heard about a friend of my daughter who went to CR last month and spent her vacation there sick in bed with Covid. It's a mixed bag.

I agree, the world wants Us dollars. But will you get back in. OR are you ready to pay the hotel for an extra 14 days of quarantine. Then have to scale the border wall from Mexico. I am on the same boat with a trip to Curacao in t weeks

I was supposed to go there the end of July and the only hangup was the 16 to 18 weeks of waiting to get your passport/visa. What is now I couldn't tell you. I think you'd have to check with the State Department.

You are sadly correct. At least here the medical facilities are better equipped the handle this problem and you speak the same language.

Bottom line. Is the trip losing your wife over, or her losing you. 2 extra weeks in a hotel in quarantine are expensive and very boring. This thing will eventually blow over. I’m finding things , close to home , to photograph. America is a beautiful place. In a years time, Costa Rica will still be there.

My grand mother and 4 of her siblings died in December 1918 from Spanish flu. All young adults. We are not any better at treating Covid than we were Spanish Flu. I know, I’m a physician. My wife and I are vaccinated, wear masks and stay home. Not terribly exciting ,but survivable.

One thing you should think about is, if you go and come down with Covid and get real sick, do you really want to take your chances in a Costa Rica hospital, even if you can get in one? That would be a no brainer decision for me … to not go.

Assuming there would even be an air ambulance available. Doubt that they’re hanging around in Costa Rica, waiting to fly sick Americans back to the states. Could be, I guess.
