Who can silent and allow a child to be turned into a DSLRinosaur?

On a more serious note, the phone lends itself to 'low and wide'. An 8 yr old probably has the 'low' already covered. The technique to selectively focus and '2-finger zoom' may / may not already be in their skillset. I haven't been to Gatorland, but the photos make it seem like that's maybe not the ideal location for phone photos. Regarding where could be 'good', most anything of interest for the youngster where they can get close to the subject at eye-level is an opportunity to use that phone to capture an interesting image. You, of course, may have to engage a knee or the seat of your pants to see the same opportunity.

You, and a few others seem to share CHG_CANNON's view that my daughter and I should focus on getting good with an iPhone as opposed to a DSLR. I appreciate the viewpoint, but none of you have offered any suggestions as to HOW to go about that. The point isn't what gear to use, the question is, what are some good ideas to create a fun, interesting, engaging environment / activity to foster her interest? Just saying "learn to use the iPhone" without offering any suggestions on how to do that is not helpful. Do you know of any on-line courses, books, or blogs on the subject? Others here have offered a number of useful suggestions. Some have used the word "Challenge", with some ideas as to how to do that. I like that word. Perhaps if I had used that in my original post, folks wouldn't be so focused on the negative connotation of the word "Assignment", which I get.

Also, you seem to miss the point that the reason for the D3100 is because she sees me with the D7500 and thinks that's cooler than the iPhone.

Do any of you have any thoughts on what different approaches or techniques should be used when shooting with an iPhone vs. a DSLR?

I agree on her using a camera instead of a phone if that is what she wants to use.
But if you and/or her want to try phone photography here is a guide (full of ads but it is free): https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/good-pictures-phone-tips

I recall getting my first camera around age 10, and while it was nothing special, I really enjoyed finding patterns and taking photos of them (bricks, stone sidewalks, stripes and the like). I couldnt wait to get the film developed. I really found it interesting that things we see every day could make such interesting photos. I still look for patterns when I'm out shooting, even if its not my intended subject.
