It seem that a lot of people feel that just because they are vaccinated, they are safe. Data is showing this not to be true, so do be careful. New variants are looking like they will not be deterred by a vaccine, so you are putting yourself into a situation like it was at the start of all this, when there was no vaccine. Only thing is that now the virus is worse than the original. Ask yourself if your future health and possibly your life, is worth a risky trip to anywhere, right now.

Better to be able to walk and talk and pick up a camera in a year or two from now that to think you have to take a trip anywhere right now, that might open you to contracting what ever virus is out there. You have no idea of who each person is that you will be coming into contact with from the moment you step outside until you are home.

I feel those that travel right now just for fun are the risk takers and due to that, we have no idea how risky they live their lives. Therefore, for me, I would rather not be around any of these types for the time being. I value my health, future health and life far more than the urge to take a trip somewhere, that I can do next year or the year after or the year after that.

This post has something very important to consider.
If you are fully vaccinated, your risk of suffering severe symptoms or needing hospitalization is probably very low. However, there still is great uncertainty of long-term secondary effects of COVID-19. So, personally, even if it would not affect me a lot right now, I will still make all I can to avoid it.

According to the CDC website, Costa Rica is a level 4 COVID-19 destination (ie. the highest level). So even if Costa Rica allows you in, the two questions one must think about (and believe me, I have been asking these myself), is: 1) is it worth it (ie. the risk of getting COVID versus going), and 2) what will you have to do to get back into the US? I believe that you might require a negative COVID test? So does the resort you go to last have tests available and if so, at what cost (some people recommend bringing a test kit along so you can do the test and get the results before getting on your flight home).
As time goes on, one loses the opportunity to travel (as one gets older). However, break through cases for vaccinated people appears to be happening and not sure what variants could be circulating in Costa Rica (don't know if they are testing for variants there). Not easy questions and one I have struggled with as well (have just cancelled a trip to the Pantanal for November). That said, I know several people who have been traveling and saying how great it is to go places and not have tons of people.

If you look at the CDC website, the United States is the same level, level 4, as Costa Rica. So is there a greater risk in Costa Rica than the US?

Very true. Which is why I haven’t been traveling in the US too other than local areas. I am however fortunate to have several places within an hours drive from my house for my wildlife photography. In fact going out whale watching in a couple hours.

Egads...! I just had a COVID test in the hospital before they would do a procedure and it was the most uncomfortable experiences I've ever had. I feel so sad for the nurse that had to administer it on me. They stick the thin plastic stick up to the back of the nose to where it joins the eye-socket. I'll lock myself in the house and live as a hermit before I ever have that done again.

Provided the trip still takes place I would definitely go and enjoy myself. Take extra masks, take necessary precautions and you should be fine.

It is starting to look as if there will always be another variant coming just around the corner, one more virus bogeyman to keep us from carrying on with our lives. If we are scared over every one of them then we will never see a normal life again.

Have a great time. Please share photos with us when you come back. I hear Costa Rica is a lovely place to visit.

What do you think the odds are for this to take place.?
International travel is so touch and go.
I'm packed and ready to go.

Check when the rainy season is in Costa Rica. This may effect what gear you pack.

Why not check with Steve Perry (a member here) who runs top quality photo trips to Costa Rica. He may be able to enlighten you in terms of your concerns. I run tours, too, and just had to cancel a tour to Oaxaca Mexico for Day of the Dead because 8 of my 12 clients were concerned about testing positive and having to quarantine in Mexico. I protected their deposits and gave them full refunds some of which came out of my pocket. The other travelers were very disappointed but I had no choice.
I expect they will run your CR trip so as others said you must weigh the risks against the rewards. BTW I am currently in Iceland on a scouting trip for tours in '22. Iceland was recently raised to Level 4 Covid warning , but I didn't give canceling my trip a 2nd thought. Everything here is operating normally and I'm very glad I'm here. I feel completely safe and I'm capturing some amazing images.

My wife and son, both fully vaccinated, just recovered from breakthrough infections, and though neither required hospitalization, it was no fun, took 10 days to recover and not something I’d want to endure away from home. Worse, it turns out that since you have dead virus in your nose for weeks after your recovery, you may still test positive for weeks afterwards. Learned this from our physician. Just some things to consider...

When my son went to CR in April on a family trip, not a tour, the CR Govt required them to have extra insurance to pay for quarantine. Not sure if that is still the case.

In addition to the Covid warnings about travel set forth by our colleagues, I would research available medical care. I had an eye emergency when I was there a few years ago. It was difficult to find a good doctor to treat the condition. I was lucky but I had to scramble around quite a bit. Who knows what the bed spaces or medical facilities will be like where you are going.

Do you want to trust the Costa Rico medical system? Not COVID related but my friend did. May she Rest In Peace. She was a resident but not a citizen. By the time she returned to the US she had spent most of her life savings and despite positive reports from her cash only MD she found upon return that her cancer had progressed to the point there was nothing that could be done. Her US Oncologist told her husband that seeing her 6 or possibly even 3 months earlier that treatment could have been possible. She died alone in the hospital because COVID restrictions prevented the family from visiting.

I have family in Costa Rica that run a birding company. As of now CR allows travelers from the US & England and others. If you are vaccinated and do not have serious health problems, you have a good chance of not being seriously ill. I am not sure how getting back into the US will go. I recently brought my family of 4 (daughter and family) to the US to get vaccinated. They had no problem getting into the US and returned to CR to run their business. The name of their company is Cotingatours.com. You would be safe with Cotinga Tours although I am not sure about your tour company. Have a great time, if you go. It is a wonderful company.

Good afternoon and congratulations on booking a photo tour in Costa Rica. If you truly want to go I would be about 99% certain that the trip will take place with little issue. I returned to the United States yesterday from Costa Rica and I am currently a resident of Costa Rica and travel back-and-forth between the states on a monthly basis. It is quite easy to travel in both directions and Costa Rica has been a level four destination since Covid. Life goes on! Good luck and I hope you enjoy your tour!
