Me, I rather preferred the haute cuisine gourmet SOS we got fed over the mostly raw chicken that got served up seemed like twice a day. But then, I've got a couple of --uh.... I haven't checked the dates on them (if there are dates on them at all), but they likely 'expired' a few decades ago-- MREs out in the Jeep, so I 'spose I'm not all that picky.

Did your wife lovingly provide you with some nice Tabasco sauce to go along with your frozen SOS, Dick?

I haven't been able to find that in local supermarkets. You're so lucky!

It's the seasoning that makes it! Otherwise it's just library paste with ground up meat.

P.S. Jim, I had them for breakfast over toast, maybe the rest of your people would like them too?

SOS The last S is "shingle", aka toast.

The last time I had it, it was spread on thin kinda melba toast and laced with a dollop of Jalapeno pepper sauce! Hot and crunchy! I washed it down with a gulp of very highly carbonated water. I burped and the dished just about flew off the table! That combination is now OFF LIMITS at my home! Orders from the Divisional Sargent Major- my wife!

I just asked my wife to make sure, she said WalMart!! If you look at all of the responders one of them posted some photos of the cans and jars, and maybe where are for sale. I'm going to buy some if I can find out where to get them. Meanwhile I'll buy the frozen ones at WM; their shelves are so damn empty all the time that you have to hit them at just the right minute or their gone! Let me know if you have any luck!

For those that feel the need to relive their military days, this is the civilian equivalent. Haven’t tried it myself - 3 years was enough for me.

My first wife would occasionally make the chipped beef version. Was like cardboard and gravy. I much prefer the ground beef variety.

Yes, I can't imagine it without black pepper. Onions too (or French's fried onions). It is already salty from he dried beef. Over real biscuits sounds better to me than toast--or garlic toast--or corn bread.

My mother used to make grits on the thick side, then chill in a loaf pan, and then fry slices till brown. SOS would work on that, yes?

My mother used to make a version with the chipped beef. Then in the Army I had the ground beef version and liked it better, so that's the way I make it now, but with my mother's white sauce recipe.
