I think this is the largest fish I have seen our resident heron catch. He dropped it multiple times and finally retreated out of sight where he would presumably tear it into more manageable pieces. The osprey circled again and again, obviously interested but did not attempt to steal the fish.

Lotsa fish! Great captures thanx for sharing!

Excellent set, Marg. Amazing what they can swallow.

Thanks, John! I’m amazed at what they swallow, too. Every time the heron catches a chipmunk in our Alabama back yard he takes it down to pond at the end of the yard where he then repeatedly dunks it. I don’t know whether he’s drowning it or wetting to slide down more easily.

Interesting for sure, Marshall! I’ve seen our heron eating chipmunks after dunking them in the pond repeatedly and once saw him eat a snake which continued to flail around. I tend to think every critter has a purpose and appreciate them all, but a rat? Only redeeming factor is as food for other critters like this heron! Thanks for he link!

Thanks, so much, Patty! Glad you like them. It was very exciting but I must say I was getting tired holding the big lens up and almost breathed a sigh of relief when he hid. 🤣
