Welcome to U.K. prices, always way above U.S. for new cameras.

Hi Everyone ..
I'm in UK with a D300s ,
Thinking of upgrade to D500 , but am shocked at the prices here ..
New Body about £1400 ( $1945 us ) and a used one for £900 ($1245 )..

My D300s would sell for about $250 If I'm lucky .
A Used D600 sells for about $500 ..

How come the D500 sells for so much ?
I'ts not exactly a new model ..though still made ..

I can afford the High cost of the D500 but dont want something that is only
worth a quarter of the price in 3 years time ..

Are they expensive in other countries as well ?

I would suggest buying off Ebay, hardly any import taxes and you pay US prices if you buy from US seller.
I am in the US and use the international shipping option for shipping out of the country.
You still get the 30 day warranty to protect you and you get great prices, what could be better.

I think this is the cheapest you will see this camera new. Maybe a $100 cheaper at Christmas or the usual Spring sale, but I doubt it. Eur, Can Aus, always pay much more. Maybe the countries to USA dollar thing or possible tax tariffs.

It’s not about currency differences. It’s about a difference in retail consumer culture ... and VAT.

The specific details of this would make great fodder for idiotic arguments, and could easily veer into politics, so I will spare us the details ;-)

Yes that's about right here in the USA....the D500 has retained its value well even on the used market. The D7500 comes close to the performance of the D500 at a bit lower cost.

The D500 probably is the best APS-C (DX) DSLR camera Nikon ever made, and probably the last. There still is a market for this camera among people who have good lenses for this system. Who knows how long this is going to last?

The D-500 is a very high spec camera, it is a high performance 'Flagship' of the APS-C sensor more so than any camera they have made. They have charged and aggressive price for a very good camera. That said, All manufacturers see Mirrorless as the future, and parts shortages have kept supplies low and prices high.
If you want an APS-c DSLR it would be hard to do better. But as supplies normalize, it is likely that the D500 price will come down a bit. There is nothing wrong with a D300s but there is a very large improvement in performance to be had in the D500. While Nikon has produced APS-C Z cameras, I don't think they have yet made an equivalent to what the D500 is. If they do, that will also push D500n prices down.

Actually the Z50 is very close to the D500.
Has faster frame rate and better high ISO performance than the D500.
The only major difference is the Z50 has one card slot which for most people is not an issue.
The area where the Z50 crushes the D500 is in video performance as it can actually keep the moving subject in focus where the D500 really struggles in this area.
Finally the Z mount is the future where the F mount is ancient outdated technology from the 1950's.

The world has gone berserk over convenience video being included with still cameras. Those who find a need for occasional video, or video for presentations or training can do fine with the video capabilities of the D500. Others, including those who think that they just have to have 4K or 8K video also need to use a dedicated video camera system. If focus is a thing with you, then you need to choose a system which offers the option of using parfocal lenses.

Folks who claim esoteric needs, then set up with a hammer as their only tool forfeit all credibility as being serious pursuers of their claimed craft.

As far as claimed high-ISO shortcomings, people who have come to me claiming an equipment problem generally turn out to be clueless about how to really execute successful photography in low light situations. It's almost always a problem with the photographer, not the equipment, no matter what camera they are using. The truth is that it is possible to execute successful low light images with a D300, and it is possible to botch them with a D850.

The D500 does fine at higher ISOs as long as you don't try to cheat by underexposing. Like every other digital camera, using a higher ISO trades off dynamic range, so you have to be honest in what you are doing. In my experience, that's where just about everyone gets in trouble. It will show up in JPEG images, and it is almost certain to also show up in NEFcaptures.

If you want to do the art, learn the craft. If you want to do the specialties, learn the special things. Quit being lazy and expecting the world and your equipment to do everything for you. That's what high school kids do.

Wow!!! How did we deserve this collective spanking?

First, nobody says anything other than the D500 is a great camera.

Second, learning the craft indeed is essential. That applies to the most advanced mirrorless camera as well. However, better equipment invariably will give you better results. Any carpenter knows that. I shoot with two advanced mirrorless cameras. Yet, I am everything but lazy. My professional equipment does nothing for free--I spent a lot of time learning to get great results out of it.

Third, I have not gone beserk over video. In fact, I have never taken a video with my professional bodies even though they are very good at this. I chose those bodies because they deliver outstanding photographs.

So please take your frustrations elsewhere.

I use a D500 and the short answer to your question, is it worth the extra bucks? Is, yes it is!
