Well I am a beginner. I am quite happy with my photos. I have won a 2 photo contests online (beginner contests). Maybe I am in the wrong group here. Not use to being jumped all over everytime I post something. 😕

You are fine, Relax and Enjoy....a teaspoon of "Doc's Skin Thickener" will go a long way. When you post you will get all sorts of responses...Remember they are opinions....but some are opinions from lifelong photographers, current Pro and Pro-Am, and some from all the rest.....there is value in much of it.

Oh, the question - RAW and some JPEG and a little SOOC, several processing programs........

Doesn't seem that you are being "jumped all over". To answer your question more information is needed. A lot of the "RAW-versus-JPG" discussion also depends upon your camera's image processing software and the settings you have selected. I found that the jpg images from my Canon 90D were not nearly as good as the images from my 6D.

RAW is simply the raw information your camera collects after taking a photo. It is yours to do with as you please. It is the undeveloped photo with all aspects of development at your fingertips. Remember, YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER. You may or may not choose to change the white balance, hue, sharpness, saturation, etc., the sky is the limit! Don't let folks tell you that you couldn't possibly be using RAW to its potential because you are obviously satisfied with the photos you took and with the ones you won a competition with. However, look upon such comments as a challenge and not as though someone is jumping all over you because I can tell you that CHG_CANON has only your best interests at heart. I think you'll *get* what he's asking in due course so don't worry about it. Just remember that YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER...Now, go out there and take some photos!

AMEN, and I agree, that I find CHG_CANON's comments always informative and often with a good dose of tongue in cheek humor. Never caustic.

Adobe (Photoshop) have, over the years, very successfully carried out a brainwashing exercise on the general and professional photographic community.

Raw isn't just a file format, it's a way of life. Capturing in RAW and editing the results moves the photographer from a entry-level understanding of focal lengths and camera brands into a higher form of existence, giving a deep meaning to every shutter release and mouse click. I edit, therefore I am.

I asked a question. He came back with questions for me instead of telling me what he uses and why. I guess I don't fit in here because I am a beginner (2yrs). I use Lightroom for editing which maybe isn't considered (professional editing app). I am also shopping for a new computer strictly for my photography hobby. I also use different lens (Canon, Tamron, Tokina, Sigma). So I intent to take it slow and learn as I go.

Here's the deal, Paul is blunt but smart. Sadly you'll find a lot of people here that are turds to be turds. Stick around and you'll figure it out. Lots to be learned here but you'll need a thick skin. I shoot RAW on one card with a jpeg backup on the other. As Paul pointed out it gives you options. Fact is most of the time I'm happy with my jpegs.

For me I started in film so there wasn't a lot of fixing things. I suspect that's why I don't have to post process the images to death. Could be you're taking it slow and by doing so you're getting it right in the camera. That beats post any day.

I wish you the best and I would suggest you check out the board Steve with Backcountry Gallery runs. Lots of great shooters there especially in wildlife and landscape. Be warned, they all like RAW!

Nice shots. JPEG fine for me and very little PP only when necessary.

90%++ JPEGs. My D750 has "Neutral", "Standard", and "Vivid" settings which can tweak my JPEGs when I shoot, the way your excellent photos look like they've been tweaked in post, (and exported as JPEGs anyhow). My in-camera JPEGs just save me a lot of post-shooting time in front of a computer. I do shoot RAW on the second SD card when I encounter a scene or event that might have eventual marketing possibilities.

Might want to tell people why so they can understand what made you change.

I still shoot RAW+JPEG because I like to view the images in Windows Explorer, not an editor or cataloger.
Explorer is my cataloger. This system works well for me, my preference. It doesn't mean everyone else should do it that way.
Unless they're me.

Yep, storage is SO cheap ,why not both formats. Makes viewing SO much easier.

Everyone always states what works for them.

You have to figure out what will work for you.

A quality photo starts with a quality composition and artistic ability. A know some excellent photographers who shoot in nothing but JPEG. I shoot in RAW because I have to fix so much in editing but most of my composition snd artistic ability sucks.

Raw or RAW since there are differences of opinion on that as well in this group. Cheers.

Happy to hear you won two contests. I shoot both, I look at my JPGs first to see which ones are worth editing. Once done I simply delete jpgs and keep only the RAW file. RAW files don't always show the very best as just RAW files. If you are going through LR you certainly are exporting them as JPGs. The questions you were asked were not unreasonable IMHO. If you have LR why not see if what results you can get by playing with the sliders etc. If you consider yourself a beginner, (I still consider myself so) you can learn a lot from folks here. You were not criticized, You may not always get the answers you wanted, but learn from the questions you were asked. Enjoy the journey.

Maybe I missed it but I have not seen anyone mention that the JPEG depends on the camera profile settings. The first thing I do in ACR is check the different looks like Adobe standard, vivid, portrait etc... If you are undecided where to start your RAW processing one of these would be a good starting place. BTW, sometimes this group is not for the fainthearted, but there is an ENORMOUS amount of info and experience here; don't run off so quickly. You will get used to all the diff. personalities... just like having lots of relatives in an extended family.

Yes - RAW is best for screwed-up photos.
